Recommendations

Following the critical explanation and analysis of the
causes, effects and control measures of land erosion in Sapele metropolis, Sapele
Local Government Area. The researcher suggests the following recommendations as
possible measures of land (soil) erosion in Sapele metropolis.

i.
Construction of good and functional
drainage and culvert system should be encouraged, such constructions should be
made across every road and street and should link each other for general and
easy flow of erosion run-off into receiving reservoirs

ii.
The construction of houses (building)
and other structures in or along channels (natural drain) should be anchored.
This means that appropriate authorities must be consulted for site supervision
and inspection before commencement of building.

iii.
Planting of vegetation
(afforestation) and cover crops (grasses) should be encourage as a measure to
protect the soil from the direct impact of rain fall and surface runoff. Thus
forestalling the menace of land (soil) erosion in Sapele metropolis to a
reasonable extent.
 iv.
The state government through the
legislative arm should enact appropriate laws against the indiscriminate
sitting of buildings and the dumping of refuse directly into drains and other
water runoff channels and such laws must be anchored with strict enforcement by
the concern agencies.

v.
The rate and magnitude of soil
erosion by water (surface run-off) can be effectively controlled by controlling
the various factors that causes soil erosion. Some of these measures includes: The
planting of vegetable plant covers and planting of trees, construction of
drainage and culverts systems, dredging of rivers to contain the excess water
and also discouraging the act of dumping refuse and other waste matters into
drainages which usually results to blockage, this preventing the free flow of
water.
 vi.
Finally, it is very importance to
mention that the control of soil erosion should be a combined effort from both
the community, government and non-governmental organization (NGO’S) whose
objectives are ecologically inclined.
