Public health and social service

Introduction
Public
health is the part of medicine which prevent diseases and promote health,
efficiency of the entire population through organized community efforts social services
; are organized governmental and non-governmental services that provide help
and advice to the people in different areas of life e.g. mental health, housing,
mental illness etc Social works; is an aspect of public health that deals with
care or  service provided for the community.
Social workers work with the community as colleague to make them overcome the challenges
of community works.

Historical development of social
services and hygiene reforms
The
history of social medicine /services could be traced to the 19th century
in England during the time of Neumann [1847] and Virchow [1848] but ignore by
many because of the germ causation of diseases.
Social welfare services provision in Nigeria
The
three tiers of government (federal state local) are responsible for the
provision of social services for the society.
Objectives of Social Welfare Services
The
major objective of social welfare services is to promote social functioning of
people, groups, and communities for meaningful and productive life.
Department
of environment was created for preventive public health officers which are
1.     
Environmental
Health Officers [EHOs], and
2.     
Environmental
Health Technicians [EHTs].
The
EHOS perform the following duties in the destitute control;
    1. Helping to control nuisance
    2. Supervising the
burial and removal of decrease destitute.
Functions
of EHOS in ancillary public health in various sum heredy;
The duties of Public social work are;
     1.    General
sanitation of the environment
     2.    Transmission
referral of the poor/aged
     b.   mental  health, drug prevention  and treatment. The [EHOS]
The
duties of the EHOS are
     1.    Educating
the people on the appropriate use of drugs.
      2.   Referring
mental cases to psychiatric home and hospital
The social welfare department
Social
welfare services this are packages that are usually provided by government and
voluntary organization to alleviate the conditions of the poor, especially the
socially deprived, the aged, the deformed.
There
are two types of social welfare services
1.     
Residual
social welfare services
2.     
Institutional
social welfare services
