Abstract
The knowledge of ABO and Rhesus blood group is
important in blood transfusion services, genetic studies of population and also
resolving medico-legal issue like despite parentage. Therefore this study aims
at investigating the pattern of ABO and Rhesus blood group distribution in the
population that makes up Ofuoma Community; a total of 100 random selected
persons were used for this study. This consisted of 62 females and 48 males.
Blood group and Rhesus factor determination was carried out by the
antigen-antibody agglutination test, result revealed that blood group O
constituted 54 (54%) of the population, followed by group B with 23 (23%),
group A was 18 (18%) and AB was 5 (5%). The distribution of Rhesus D antigen
showed that 94 (94%) were Rhesus positive and 6 (6%) were Rhesus negative. In
conclusion the pattern of ABO and Rhesus blood group distribution of this
population is similar to those reported in other regions of the country.
