Applications are invited for a two-year PostDoc position. The PostDoc position is financed by the VELUX Foundation as part of the research project “Empathy and Interpersonal Understanding”. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Center for Subjectivity Research, Department of Media, Cognition and
Communication, where the project is based, and will be expected to begin on 1 August 2012.
Description of the project
The aim of the PostDoc project is to explore the role of empathy in social cognition. When surveying the current debate (in philosophy, developmental psychology, social neuroscience etc.) it is clear that there is little agreement as to what the term “empathy” actually denotes. Is empathy a basic, sui generis, form of intentionality directed at other experiencing subjects, is it a form of inner imitation that relies on mirror-resonance mechanisms, or is it, for instance, only permissible to talk of “empathy” when a person reaches an understanding of another´s mental state by way of imagining what it is like for that other person to be in the situation she is in? The project is expected to discuss and critically assess the most important available proposals and to systematically analyze the role of empathy in social cognition. Prior familiarity with phenomenology and the contemporary Theory of Mind debate will be an advantage.
The application should include a proposal outlining the overall aims and methodology of the project as well as a time-plan (see appendix 4).
