Police and Crime Control

An
assessment of oral interview and a perusal of documents available to the writer
shows that there is a direct relationship between the quality/quantity of
police enforcement and crime control in Sapele. Edem, a police  sergeant at the Sapele police (Market Road)
maintain that the police Sapele has been responsible for the down-turn crime
case in Sapele metropolis over-times. He however mention that  police is inadequately equipped to deal with
dangerous criminal while he could not rule out  the complicity by some policemen with
criminals.

Five
traders interview at the Sapele main market concluded that police have engaged
criminal in gruesome battle involving exchange of gun fire over the years in
Sapele. They established the fact that although there have been complicity
between police and criminal, criminal activities have been on the increases
over the years in the market zone.
The
secretary to the Sapele local government Mr. Omonigho P.A submit that the
police are doing their best within the limit of their resources. He maintains
that the down-turn of the economy has limited the proper maintenance of the
police terms of supply of the necessary equipment and payment of salaries on a
regular basis.
It is
generally established that the police are manipulated by the elite (Economic
and political) in the society of Sapele as elsewhere. It so happen that crime
committed in the zone 4 of the Sapele district are hushed because of the
influence of the people in this zone. The police are also accused of dramatizing
crime committed in zones by I and 2 (inner core) of the city as against zone 4.
Thus police
records show a higher crime figure for zone 1 and 2 if there is a crime while
they would not make an arrest in zone 4 because of the respect for the people
in this zone.
People in
zone 1 especially are poor and do not have money to bribe the police and as
such more easily convicted and sent to jail. These finding therefore limit the
findings of professor Shaw and Mckay of the Chicago school of criminology which
says that ecology is the major reason for crime.
