Plowshare Farm is seeking a co-manager to help run our 3 acre Community
Supported Agriculture program and market garden for the 2012 season. This is a
very demanding, but rewarding, job opportunity, which requires balancing
several key aspects of the farm business. As co-manager at Plowshare, the
successful applicant will have a wide variety of shared responsibilities,
including:
– Promoting the CSA in the community, through our online blog/newsletter and at
the farmers market
– Starting and caring for seedlings, as well as other greenhouse management
– Writing each weeks “Pick-List” and managing harvest days
– Delivering produce to CSA members and Farmers market, and running a
beautiful, profitable market stall.
– Managing a diverse work crew of interns, volunteers, WWOOFers, friends, CSA
and community members.
– Timely and accurate record keeping around seeding, planting, harvesting and
marketing
– Other general farm work
While this position encompasses a wide range of different activities on the
farm, the primary areas of responsibility will be
“harvest-to-market”, attending farmers markets, and
managing/coordinating work in the garden. Therefore the successful applicant
will have excellent communications and people skills.
Work Schedule and Compensation
This position runs from March/April to November 2012. While the hours will vary
through the season, one can expect to work 55-60 hours each week. Compensation
will be according to experience, from $200-$300/week, plus room and board.
About Plowshare Farm
Our land is located in the village of Salem, Ontario, a 20 minute drive north
of Guelph, and approximately 1 hour 45 minutes north-west of Toronto. Most
activity at Plowshare Farm centres around our 3 acre vegetable garden, which we
cultivate using our two work-horses Sally and Milly, a small rototiller, and
lots of sweat and muscle. We sell our vegetables through our Community
Supported Agriculture program, as well as at the Orangeville Farmes Market
every Saturday morning. There is also a small horse boarding/riding facility
onsite with 6 riding horses, as well as two pet goats, and several dogs and
cats.
