Kinder Morgan’s bitumen pipeline


May 1, 2015 to Dec. 31, 2015 term with potential for renewal

Position Overview

The PIPE UP Network is made up of residents of Southwestern BC who
have come together because of our concerns about the safety,
environmental, and financial implications of shipping tar sands along
Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline, which runs from Edmonton, AB
to Vancouver, BC.

Members of the network are dedicated to educating themselves and their
communities about the existing pipeline, plans for expansion, and
alternatives to tar sands; showing that we have the power to make the

We are seeking a Chapter Co-ordinator to build capacity within our
membership from May, 1, 2105 to Dec. 31, 2015.

The successful candidate will report to the PIPE UP Board of
Directors. The specific responsibilities of the position are outlined
in more detail below.

Anticipated Start Date: May 1, 2015

Location: Fraser Valley, BC

Reports to: PIPE UP Board of Directors

Compensation: $1,500 monthly

Key Responsibility Areas
• Encourage and facilitate PIPE UP Chapters to become self-sustaining
community hubs of action in Langley, Abbotsford, Surrey, Chilliwack
and other areas as they may be established.
• Work with PIPE UP NETWORK Board of Directors, Admin person and
Allies to identify and organize opportunities which fulfill the Pipe
Up mandate.
• Provide transition documentation upon conclusion of the contract.

and stakeholders
• Respond creatively and positively to situations of stress and conflict
• Foster open communication within and among diverse groups
• Work in a team environment
• Work with minimal supervision
• Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:
• Passionate interest in making the world a better place through
grassroots engagement
• Knowledge of issues that relate to communities within the lower mainland.
• Experience in volunteer management, meeting facilitation, and/or
community relations
• Knowledge of local activists, networks, groups, organizations and government.
• Innovative thinker willing to try new ideas and new ways of organizing
• Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt to changing situations
• Success oriented, assertive, high achiever, with demonstrated
leadership and community building skills
• Experience with public speaking and public engagement strategies
• Excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills and strong
organizational skills
• Skilled in time management
• Comfortable with online tools and social media, for example online
video conferencing, Google Maps, Google Docs, blogs and Twitter.
• Excellent computer and document creation skills
• Access to a mobile device, preferably with data access (e.g. email, web).
• Vehicle and a valid BC Driver’s License.
• Previous experience in community organizing and/or grassroots
political organizing is an asset, but not a requirement
• Familiarity with consensus decision making an asset
• Experience with Nationbuilder would be an asset.

Working and Living Conditions:
• Must we able to work from a home office or a shared workspace
• Flexible work hours
• Some weekend and evening work is anticipated
• Travel within the Fraser Valley (Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and
Chilliwack) will be required
