Rwanda. The Women’s Health Program Officer will serve as a clinician educator
and technical expert to devise innovative solutions for some most intractable
health problems affecting the poor, working in one of the most dynamic global
health settings in the world today.
Organizational Profile :
Partners In Health (PIH), headquartered in Boston,
MA, is a Harvard-affiliated global health organization relentlessly committed
to improving the health of the poor and marginalized. Working in partnership
with local governments, we deliver high quality, comprehensive health care that
saves lives while strengthening health systems and helping our patients
overcome socioeconomic barriers to good health.
By leveraging the services we
provide with rigorous evaluation and academic research, PIH develops
innovative, scalable and sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most
intractable health problems. We work side by side with patients, health
professionals, and public officials, support local organizations, and hire and
train local people who provide care, design innovative strategies, build
infrastructure, and manage projects. Ninety-four percent of the funds we raise
go to our programs, which employ 15,000 people in the countries where we work,
the majority of whom are people living in poverty.
PIH began working in Rwanda in 2005, where today we
serve a catchment area of 800,000 through 37 public health centers and three
hospitals in partnership with our sister organization, Inshuti Mu Buzima (IMB).
Taking the lessons learned and expertise honed in Haiti, our efforts in Rwanda
have achieved rapid success, gaining the attention of both the highest levels
of the Government of Rwanda and the international community. Since 2005, Rwanda
has achieved some of the most dramatic improvements in population health and
poverty reduction in the world.
Despite these substantial gains, maternal mortality
remains unacceptably high.
PIH/IMB is working closely with the Ministry of
Health to improve maternal and reproductive health care at all levels of the
health system, with the goal of eliminating preventable maternal deaths. In
addition, we are a lead partner in pioneering services for prevention,
screening and treatment of cancers affecting women, including gynecologic
malignancies, through the Butaro Hospital Center of Excellence in Cancer Care.
In this area, we work in close partnership with Brigham and Women’s Hospital
and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, both in Boston.
