PIH is one of the two founding organizations of the OpenMRS open source electronic medical record system.

Overall Responsibilities:
We are looking for a full-time J2EE developer to join the team in Rwanda on development and support of our open source Electronic Medical Record systems. The OpenMRS system is currently used in 12 PIH-supported health centers in Rwanda, and is slated for national implementation. This person will be working in a complex and fast-paced environment with an experienced technical team, as well as clinical, data entry and research teams in Rwanda. This job combines the cutting edge of medical informatics work in a developing country, with the emotional rewards of seeing this work help people in a very direct way.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Design, develop, and support new features based on needs identified by the project.
• Bug fixes and improvements to existing features.
• Work with the Rwanda Ministry of Health and other Rwanda-based organizations at a national level on supporting software development, or standards for EMR systems where required.
• Mentor less-experienced programming staff to undertake projects of increasing complexity and to work with autonomy over time.
• Support clinical teams in improving tools to document and present patient-level data.
• Provide reporting tools for project monitoring and quality improvement.
• Support research teams by querying and exporting data for academic publications.
• Contribute modules and patches to the OpenMRS open source project.

Qualifications:
• 2+ years experience J2EE web application development.
• Demonstrated ability with software development in Java.
• Knowledge and experience in several of the following areas:
OpenMRS or other medical software.
Spring, Hibernate, MySQL, Tomcat, Eclipse, Linux.
UI development skills including AJAX, JQuery, or other technologies.
Test-Driven Development or Behavior-Driven Development.
Design patterns and best practices.
• Strong communication and organizational skills. and ability to work independently.
• Comfortable with living in resource-poor settings.
• A commitment to social justice and health care.
