Outward

Position
Summary
:
To manage course delivery, logistics and provide support to instructors,
participants and other related clientele during the administration of the
Outdoor Leadership Experience (OLE).
The
OLE is offered in collaboration with Pine River Institute (PRI) and involves up
to 8 participants at a time in the backcountry for 6-8 weeks as the first step
in their addictions treatment process with PRI.
Duties
and Responsibilities:
  • Works
    very closely with PRI staff to coordinate the ongoing successful execution
    of the OLE and to understand each resident’s potential, challenges and
    addiction
  • Together
    with PRI, jointly responsible for the health and well-being of students
    while on program
  • Hires
    and manages instructional staff, resulting in efficient and safe program
    delivery
  • Manages
    logistics, food, equipment, transportation, route planning, staffing,
    emergency response and curriculum plans to maintain appropriate risk
    management and oversight of safety systems
  • Create
    curriculum to integrate Outward Bound materials in harmony with PRI
    philosophy and program objectives
  • Provides
    on-call service, manages or executes evacuations and other field responses
  • Fulfill
    the role of field staff when needed
  • Organizes
    and facilitates ongoing program evaluation
  • Participates
    in the training and mentoring of staff in program delivery procedures
  • Maintains
    up to date knowledge of current industry trends and standards
  • Effectively
    utilize group and risk management skills, maturity and role modeling to
    create a safe and supportive environment for student-centered learning
Risk
Management:
  • Achieves
    the objectives of the Outward Bound Canada National Safety Policy
  • Facilitates
    all incident reporting processes
  • Monitors,
    assesses and evaluates Instructors’ risk management decisions
  • Provides
    risk management briefings and debriefings to staff
  • Ensures
    students are briefed as to participation expectations and safety
    requirements
Skills
and Experience:
  • Commitment
    to the growth and development of others on an individual, group and
    societal level, compassion for people and for the health of the
    environment
  • Ability
    to model effective and appropriate leadership style(s) and role model
    behavior in line with the values of OBC
  • Comfort
    in working with youth with difficult life stories & ability to
    establish effective rapport with staff and students
  • Experience
    in managing and maintaining a positive instructor team and environment
  • Experience
    on extended Wilderness tripping program delivery in a leadership role
  • Ability
    to instruct canoe tripping, backpacking, snowshoeing, wilderness travel
    and campcraft skills and assess associated risks
  • Understanding
    and application of Outward Bound Canada methods and philosophy
  • Proficient
    in behaviour management, crisis intervention and problem solving
CERTIFICATIONS:
  • F-Class
    (or equivalent) Driver’s License
  • Wilderness
    First Responder
  • Bronze
    Cross or NLS
  • CPR-C
  • Prevention
    and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (PMAB) (course often available
    through PRI as part of training)
  • Post
    Secondary education in outdoor education, adventure therapy, or relevant
    field Whitewater Rescue Technician
  • Moving
    Water Paddling Certification (an asset)
  • Position
    requires police background check including Vulnerable Sector Check
COMPENSATION
AND BENEFITS:
  • Annual
    salary of $45,000
