The
Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) needs your unique skills
and knowledge as a leadin

g expert on water monitoring methodologies and
technologies, to plan, and implement specialized stream water monitoring
studies, to coordinate with partner organizations, and to provide leadership to
staff and contractors in the field.

What
can I expect to do in this role?
  • Participate
    extensively in the design of field studies, establish related sampling
    stations throughout the province to monitor stream water quality and
    select and procure the necessary sampling equipment and supplies
  • Research
    new techniques, instrumentation, equipment and software to maintain
    technical expertise in the water monitoring field
  • Provide
    technical leadership, expertise, training, advice and guidance on
    appropriate sampling methods and protocols
  • Undertake
    extensive travel to install monitoring equipment, collect samples, and
    deliver them to the MOECC laboratory
  • Oversee
    the collection, preparation and submission of biological and chemical
    samples, including complex sample preparation
  • Provide
    project/team leadership and technical expertise in the field by
    independently training and coordinating other field staff
  • Track
    sample submissions; maintain program-related data files
  • Obtain
    required permits and procure contracts

How
do I qualify?
Mandatory
  • Valid
    Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence to travel to various sites
  • Ability
    to travel extensively and work independently in adverse conditions (e.g.
    cold and/or hot weather, wind, rain/snow) and remote locations, performing
    infrastructure or station repairs or sampling activities that are
    physically demanding (e.g. hiking into/out of river valleys, wading
    streams) and that require regular lifting, sometimes heavy weights
Technical
Knowledge
  • You
    have a thorough, practical knowledge of technical and specialized water
    sampling methods and can apply, deploy, operate, and maintain related
    equipment (e.g. telemetry, automated water samplers, water quality
    sensors, data loggers, stream gauging equipment, and infrastructure to
    house/store such equipment)
  • You
    can read and interpret schematics to establish sampling stations and
    determine optimal sampling methods
  • You
    have demonstrated knowledge of data collection, field techniques and
    laboratory sample submission procedures
  • You
    have demonstrated knowledge of building construction and use of
    construction tools
  • You
    have knowledge of health and safety requirements and demonstrate sound
    judgment related to potential safety hazards
  • You
    can troubleshoot equipment problems and make minor repairs
Permits

  • You
    know how to obtain building permits for small buildings such as sampling
    huts (e.g. construction permits from municipalities, electrical permits)
  • You
    can apply government procurement and contract management policies,
    procedures and best practices

    have strong leadership skills

Environmental
and Legislation Knowledge
  • You
    know government water management policies, standards and guidelines
  • You
    are familiar with relevant legislation and regulations (e.g. Nutrient
    Management Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Environmental Protection Act)
  • You
    know health and safety legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety
    Act) and safe operating procedures and work practices
Salary
Range: $1,321.19 – $1,624.55 per week
