Registered Nurse – Palliative Care

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To use the nursing process in assessing the needs of patients/families as they deal with pain and other symptoms related to a diagnosis of cancer, or are faced with the challenges associated with a disease that has reached the end-of-life phase. To participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team in the planning and implementation of an identified plan of care. Identification and implementation of appropriate nursing interventions within that plan of care. To assist with the education of patients, families and nursing staff in the areas of pain and symptom management, psychosocial support and bereavement counselling. To act as a liaison with and a resource to community care providers. As an individual practitioner, to maintain competence and professionalism relevant to current practice.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (in good standing);
* current B.C.L.S.;
* demonstrated commitment to maintain Reflective Practice Standards as outlined by the CNO;
* significant recent experience in Palliative Care and Community Nursing;
* BScN is considered an asset;
* RNAO and CANO membership is an asset;
* post graduate certificate in Oncology or Palliative care is preferred;
* CNA certification in Oncology (CON(C) or Hospice Palliative Care (CHPCN(C) required, or willing to complete same within 2 years;
* proven organizational, prioritization, problem-solving and teaching skills;
* demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills with ability to foster good public relations in a family-centred environment with tact and empathy;
* demonstrated excellent communication skills – verbal, written and listening;
* familiar and comfortable with electronic documentation – Meditech
* proven experience with providing symptom management over the telephone;
* demonstrated ability to work and perform in stressful and emotionally intense situations;
* ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, but also independently with minimal supervision; and
* demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health’s comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff, patient, and environmental safety and participation in regular in-service education in this area.

SALARY: $29.36 to $42.44 per hour

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association.
