One Acre Fund Program Director Job Vacancy in Rwanda

Job
description
Job Description
As we grow, One Acre Fund is seeking to add one new
country per year to our operations. We are seeking the kind of person that can
be dropped into a country with significant support financially and logistically,
and can create from scratch a high-quality company in a very short time.
We are seeking someone who can do the following
things:
  • Create a strategic vision: This position does
not involve managing an existing operation – we are seeking a entrepreneur
who can create an operation, growing it from roughly 5 existing staff to
hundreds. This involves a lot of strategic flexibility and independence.
We are also seeking someone who is based in the field (in rural areas) at
first, in order to craft a vision that results in the best possible
    customer service to farmers.
  • Hire and develop staff: Our program directors
will have to hire a lot of people, and more importantly, invest the
majority of their energy in developing managers and leaders underneath
    them.
  • Engage staff and lead: Our program model
requires high tailoring to specific contexts. The program director will
have to make decisions together with their leadership team by engaging
them, and then lead them to execute a common vision.
  • External and internal relations: We are
seeking someone who will be a strong communicator both externally and also
internally, together with fellow leaders in the organization.
Career Growth and Development
One Acre Fund invests in building management and
leadership skills. Your manager will invest significant time in your career
development. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through
mentorship and through regular management consulting-style career reviews. We
also have regular one-on-one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career
goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be
passionate about. Because of our rapid growth, we constantly have new
high-level roles opening up and opportunities in many functions. This results
in fast career growth for our staff.
This position would involve an initial 6-12 month
training period in one of our existing countries of operation. Then the
candidate would be posted to a new country, where we have roughly five existing
staff. The mandate would be to grow that into a decent-sized company in a few
years.
Qualifications
We are seeking exceptional professionals with 4 to
8+ years of work experience, and a demonstrated long-term passion for
international development. They will serve in a career-track position that
combines both field and management experience.
We are looking for truly extraordinary candidates
that will help take our organization to the next levels of impact and scale.
This is a competitive posting for a career-track role with minimum initial
commitment of two years. Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly
encouraged to apply:
  • Strong work experiences. We are seeking an
entrepreneur who has previously grown an operation from scratch to
hundreds of staff, or tens of thousands of customers, etc, in a developing
nation. And we want someone who wants to go back to scratch, and do it
again, instead of managing a large existing operation.
  • Likeability and humility. All of our country
directors to date have grown up within our operation, learning directly
from farmers in a start-up environment. We value humility and likeability,
and wish to be joined by leaders that value the same.
  • Top-performing undergraduate background
(please include GPA and test scores on your resume).
  • A willingness to commit to living in rural
areas of East Africa for at least three years – this is a long-term,
career-track role. The candidate should have at least one year
demonstrated experience working in the developing world.
  • Ability to cook/laugh – desirable.
  • Language: English required in Kenya, and
French required in Rwanda and Burundi. French-speakers are particularly
    encouraged to apply.
Preferred Start Date Flexible
Compensation Starts

paying a meaningful salary for long-term placement in developing nations.

SYSTEMS
ASSOCIATE
Wanted
Exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years of
work experience to serve in a career-track position that combines both field
and management experience.
Job Location
Rural Kenya (English required).
Duration
Minimum 2 years commitment, full-time job.
Organization Description
Most of the world’s poor are farmers, representing
the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund
is a growing NGO in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania that is innovating a
new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of
giving handouts, One Acre Fund invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain
in farm income. We provide farmers with a “market bundle” that
includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our
program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and
measure 50-100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus
on generating better lives for the people that we serve.
Job Description
Rapid organization growth translates into great
career opportunities for our staff. We invest heavily in careers – we want to
develop our next group of country directors, R&D directors, and partnership
leaders.
The Systems team plays an integral role in the
day-to-day operations of One Acre Fund, including but not limited to inventory
management, input delivery to our clients, procurement, customer service, field
support, and HQ support.
The Systems team is looking for associates who will
play a crucial role in creating, streamlining and facilitating processes among
all teams at One Acre Fund including Field, Finance, IT, Logistics,
Procurement, and more. We are looking for people who can forge a bridge between
our ever-evolving field operations and the technical, data-heavy moving pieces
working behind the scenes to support those field operations. The ideal
candidate will have a background in systems design, supply chain management,
industrial engineering, financial analysis or management consulting and will
also have the flexibility to work in a fast-paced and non-traditional
environment.
Some questions tackled by the Systems team this
year include:
  • How can we coordinate a complex set of
    deliveries, balancing factors such as:
    • Varied individual client orders
    • Maintaining sufficient inventory and tracking
      inventory flows
    • Securing and operating a fleet of trucks
    • Loading and delivering on a tight schedule
    • Field complexity – scheduling considerations,
      specialized needs, unexpected challenges
  • How can we deliver a bag of live sweet potato
vines to every single One Acre Fund farmer in Kenya within 24 hours of
    being cut at the farm?
  • How can we quickly determine which farmers
have met our payment targets and send out incentives in a timely fashion,
making sure that the incentives go to the right people and are actually
    received by our clients?
  • How can we handle customer service issues at
scale, when an individual complaint involves mining through several
    datasets?
Systems Associates will be asked to tackle 2-4
substantial projects, working closely with other teams and managing staff,
project calendars and deliverables for those projects. We’re looking to find ways
to leverage the mountains of data available to us to improve and add to our
services to clients. We’re also looking to improve the processes already used
by our teams to minimize headaches and improve efficiency, allowing us to
continue our accelerated growth. The Systems Associate role is perfect for a
technically-minded, detail-oriented professional who wants their work to have
direct ties to meaningful, high impact work.

plus. Please highlight any such relevant experience in your application.

Job Description As One Acre
Fund expands, a key part of our long-term goal to reach at least 1.1M farm
families this decade is to launch one new country per year. It is also
important that we understand the landscape of potential countries as soon as
possible – so that we know how we may need to change our program model to fit
new areas.
We are seeking an exceptionally talented
professional with very strong independent problem-solving skills, an ability to
self-manage, and strong overall judgment. This person should also have strong
networking ability, and general stability / ability to deal with traveling

    • Handling legal registration.
    • Finding/hiring of office and housing.
    • Initial equipment purchases.
    • Creation of well-functioning finance and
accounting operation with proper financial controls.
  • The end goal will be to validate the country
as a possible area of operation for One Acre Fund. If scouting is
successful, the organization will proceed to grow our core program there
to a goal scale of 10,000+ farmers and 100+ staff within two additional years.
This would be staffed either by an experienced manager from one of our
existing countries, or possibly the new country scout can grow into this
    role.

TECHNICAL
ASSOCIATE
Wanted Exceptional
early career professional to serve in a position that combines both business
technology and management experience in Africa.
Job Location Western
Kenya/Rwanda.
Duration Minimum 2
years commitment, full-time job.
Organization Description Most of the world’s poor are farmers, representing the largest and most
uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund is a growing NGO in
Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania that is innovating a new way of helping
farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One
Acre Fund invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We
provide farmers with a “market bundle” that includes education,
finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our program is proven
impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure 50-100%
average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on generating
better lives for the people that we serve.
Job Description One Acre
Fund relies on several home-grown software systems to help us manage a lot of
information. As we grow our organization, we need to continually improve these
systems and facilitate the integration with third party tools. Currently our
most important tools – a program database and a finance database – are in SQL
Server with MS Access as a user interface. Our program database tool handles
the enrollment of clients, tracks farm supply orders, manages the delivery of
seed and fertilizer to clients, tracks millions of payments, and creates a wide
variety of business intelligence reports.
Given poor internet connectivity, our databases use
a distributed client/server model where field offices can perform data entry
and run reports offline while syncing with a central server as needed. As we
are growing, we are looking to:
  • Scale our existing tools to capture a wide
    variety of program configurations per country;
  • Provide central management and reporting tools
    while maintaining a focus on field usability;
  • Move to SQL Server Reporting services with
code libraries in C# for sharing code between central web management tools
    and offline client tools.
The Technical Associate will initially be based in
Western Kenya with an opportunity to relocate to other countries. S/he will be
responsible for the following:
  • Field-facing mission-critical databases:
    • Participate in the continued development of
mission-critical, custom databases which impact every aspect of
      operations;
    • Assist with streamlining the databases
      between different countries;
    • Develop reports and data entry tools with an
      eye towards re-usability across countries;
    • Maintain a long-term perspective when faced
      with urgent operational demands;
    • Focus on simplicity and usability for our
      local staff;
    • Work together with our small team of
      developers.
  • IT: Manage local staff for routine computer
maintenance. Assist with network management and client database
    installation and troubleshooting.
  • Technology experimentation: Experiment with a
variety of technologies to improve operations. Investigate appropriate
solutions for database scaling and interacting with third party software
    providers.
  • Operational insight: Become familiar with
every aspect of our field operations and identify areas for improvement in
the tools we develop to support the field.
  • Other: There is a lot of “other” in
    a startup.

training and mentorship of local staff.

OFFICER

Exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years of
work experience to help governments achieve the next levels of impact.
Job Location
Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, Rubengera, Rwanda, or Zomba,
Malawi (other rural postings possible).
Instead of

proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure
50-100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on
generating better lives for the people that we serve.
Job Description
One Acre Fund believes that policy is all about
implementation. No matter how good or bad the policy, its execution on the
ground is what changes lives.
To help craft policies which work on the ground, we
are starting a new Government Services unit which is working together with
regional and national partners to support government-led policy initiatives in
agriculture. Following the lead of host governments, we support them with field
implementation that changes the lives of millions of people. Our long-term goal
is to help government to transform the agricultural ecosystems of whole
countries. These projects generally utilize our existing field expertise in
farm input distribution, rural mass marketing, and scalable training programs.
For these initiatives, we need both skilled
Government Relations staff (see, for example, our Africa Government Officer
posting) and also entrepreneurial field staff based in rural areas to focus on
implementation.
  • Regional and National Strategy Design: The
Policy Innovation Officer will work with other One Acre Fund staff and
high-level government officials to develop ideas to improve livelihoods of
smallholder farmers and the efficiency of the agricultural sector.
  • Program Implementation: The Policy Innovation
Officer will roll out region-wide and eventually nationwide programs.
Examples of past projects include a farm input system that delivers seed
and fertilizer to several hundred thousand farm families; farm input
marketing programs for similar numbers; and training support for 10,000+
    extension agents.
  • Team Management: The Policy Innovation Officer
will screen, hire, and develop a staff of 30-150 full-time country
national staff, depending on the project, to support scaled
    implementation.
  • Innovation Trials: The Policy Innovation
Officer will conduct an ambitious slate of trials within several
districts, in order to discover new and effective mechanisms for promoting
mass agricultural training—and to identify promising interventions One
Acre Fund could scale-up across its entire network of smallholder farmers.
  • Collaboration with Key Officials: The Policy
Innovation Officer will update high-level officials in the ministry of
agriculture on a regular basis. The Policy Innovation Officer will also collaborate
with important leaders at partner institutions.

encouraged to apply:
  • Strong operational work experiences. We are
looking for strong leaders with direct operating experience, ideally of an
    entrepreneurial and unstructured nature.
  • Intelligence, creativity, and a desire to make
things work. We need people to develop creative ideas to improve the
quality of government services, who can then get out to the field and

    work.

SPECIAL
PROJECTS ANALYST
Wanted Exceptional
professional to work on projects that are of strategic importance to One Acre
Fund as a whole.
Job Location
Rural Kenya (other countries possible).
We are seeking an exceptional professional to work
on projects that are of strategic importance to One Acre Fund as a whole. The
goal of this role is to work across One Acre Fund’s various departments and
geographies to initiate and execute on projects that open up new operational or
strategic opportunities for the organization. The role presents a unique chance
to work on strategic priorities with the access and vantage point provided by
working closely with One Acre Fund’s field teams.
The role will divide roughly evenly, into three
parts:
  • Long-running, cross-department or
cross-country initiatives: As One Acre Fund grows, there are an increasing
number of projects that do not fall cleanly into an existing department,
and we need to execute cleanly across multiple silos. These projects would
last at least several months, tackling questions of strategic importance
    to the organization.
    • Example: Investigate a new strategic idea of
potentially incorporating family planning products into our product
portfolio, and perform the initial field research and piloting to learn
more. Conduct focus groups with farmers, do desk research to understand
the policy landscape, then build the foundation for a One Acre
Fund-provided service. Again, start in one country and then gradually
expand across One Acre Fund network.
    • Example: Training modules for new managers at
One Acre Fund. Coordinating with our leadership team, put together a
dozen training modules and self-publish them into a booklet for our
budding managers. Supplement interviews on management best practices from
our field leadership with secondary research.
    • Example: Create a “remote field
visit” department that allows management to have eyes on the field
operation in remote places every day. Hire a team 3-10 videographers and
develop a procedure for them to collect, package, and translate video on
ground-level field operations to be used for One Acre Fund’s staff
training and quality control. Start in one country and then gradually
export this across all countries where One Acre Fund operates.
    • Example: US tech consulting. Working together
with our People Operations team, One Acre Fund is working on a project to
streamline the processing of over 10,000 applications per year. Scope out
the necessary requirements (including lack of solid internet bandwidth in
rural Africa), create a job description, recruit a software developer,
and then manage the implementation of a new candidate processing system.
  • One-off, fast analyses and tasks: These are
analyses and tasks of one week or shorter duration, typically exploring a
new strategic direction for the organization.
    • Example: Write an exploratory research memo
on the current state of research on sorghum and millet in East Africa.
    • Example: Attend a particular microfinance or
agriculture industry conference, perhaps in a speaking role – with the
goal of networking and identifying new opportunities for the
      organization.
  • Communication with key stakeholders: The last
batch of work would be to communicate with key stakeholders of the
organization, as opportunities arose. This would most often involve
creating Powerpoint decks, conducting phone calls, and preparing financial
    statement summaries.
    • Example: Prepare a keynote presentation for
One Acre Fund’s executive director to deliver at an industry conference.

leadership skills. Your manager will invest significant time in your career
development. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through

that will help take our organization to the next levels of impact and scale.
This is a competitive posting for a career–track role, with a two-year minimum.
Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Strong work experiences. We are looking for a
former management consultant (or similar skill–set). Entrepreneurial and
unstructured work experiences are also helpful.
  • Strong verbal and written communicator.
  • Leadership experiences at work, or outside of
    work.
  • Top–performing undergraduate background
(please include GPA and test scores on your resume).
  • Humility and personal stability. We are
looking for passionate professionals that combine strong leadership skills
with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service.
  • A willingness to commit to living in rural

career–track role. The ideal candidate will have at least one year
demonstrated experience working in the developing world, although this is

HEALTH
DISSEMINATION MANAGER
Wanted Health
professional for career–track role in Africa, with a focus on family planning
training.
Job Location Rural
Kenya, Rwanda, or Burundi.
Job Description By
providing agriculture services, One Acre Fund has set up one of Africa’s most
promising new rural distribution networks. We offer training, product delivery,
and financing at more than 1,000 “market points.”
We have started pushing health goods through this
network. Most notably, we recently provided chlorine for water treatment for
more than 500,000 children for a year. We are increasingly interested in
searching for other “low-hanging fruit” – simple products and
trainings that we can distribute with minimal effort, for maximum humanitarian
impact.
We are particularly interested in providing family
planning training. No matter how large our agricultural gains, our farmers are
facing a grim situation if population growth continues at its current rapid
pace.
Specific responsibilities:
  • Determine the best products and services to
roll through our network. Use a combination of primary research with the
world’s foremost health distribution NGOs and companies, and also
secondary journal research to decide which products and services to
    provide.
  • Run high-quality research pilots with small
numbers of farm families to determine uptake and usage rates, and to
    estimate health impact.
  • Scale up. Source materials, design trainings,
    and potentially hire specialty staff.
Career Growth and Development One Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills.
Your manager will invest significant time in your career development. We
provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through mentorship and through
regular management consulting-style career reviews. We also have regular one-on-one
meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively
to craft roles that each person can be passionate about. Because of our rapid
growth, we constantly have new high-level roles opening up and opportunities in
many functions. This results in fast career growth for our staff.
Qualifications We are
seeking exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years of work experience. We are
looking for truly extraordinary candidates that will help take our organization
to the next levels of impact and scale. This is a competitive posting for a
career-track role with minimum initial commitment of two years. Candidates who
fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • At least one year living and working in the
developing world. This is a requirement.
  • Strong work experiences. Entrepreneurial and
unstructured work experiences are particularly helpful.
  • Leadership experiences at work, or outside of
    work.
  • Top-performing undergraduate background
(please include GPA and test scores on your resume).
  • Humility and personal stability. We are
looking for passionate professionals that combine strong leadership skills
with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service.
  • A willingness to commit to living in rural
East Africa for at least two years – this is a long–term, career–track
    role.
  • Professional/technical skills – very high
levels of proficiency with PowerPoint, Excel and other software programs.
  • Language: English required; French highly
    desirable.

Job Description
The graphic designer will work closely with our
field, government services, communications, and fundraising teams to produce
both field-facing and external-facing materials for One Acre Fund. Our rapid
growth means we are quickly expanding into new venues of communication and
marketing, from marketing materials for smallholder farmers interested in
joining One Acre Fund, to training materials for African government to
distribute through their national extension system. Unlike many in-house
graphic design positions, which focus solely on creating materials to market an
organization externally, this role will also help create a range of custom
materials to support our government services team, which partners directly with
African governments to increase the impact of their work with smallholder
farmers. The graphic designer will set a clear, consistent and professional
tone in our visual media that helps a wide variety of audiences best understand
how One Acre Fund works to put farmers first.
Primary duties of the job will include:
  • Designing custom materials to support our
government services team, including planting guides, checklists, and
    training materials.
  • Designing informational materials and
advertisements for the field operations team to distribute to One Acre
    Fund farmers.
  • Designing infographics and visual aids to help
make One Acre Fund’s program model and operations more accessible to a
    wider audience.
  • Designing and determining the layout and
functions of new pages for our website.
  • Helping determine One Acre Fund branding
strategies for marketing both internally and externally.
  • Training sessions with local headquarters
marketing teams on the basics of design and layout.

commitment of two years. Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly
encouraged to apply:
  • Demonstrated creativity and polished design
    skills (presented in a portfolio).
  • Bold vision that is capable of being
translated and scaled into the visual branding of One Acre Fund.
  • 2+ years of work experience in web and/or
    print design.
  • Strong ability to collaborate and work in a
    team.
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and
    InDesign or equivalent programs.
