The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) was
established in 2004 as a programme under the Ministry of Health and Social
Welfare (MoHSW) Mainland and Zanzibar. It was established through a cooperative
agreement entered into by the United States Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) Mainland
and Zanzibar. NBTS is charged with assuring the availability of adequate and
safe blood and blood products in the country.
NBTS in collaboration with the United States
Government (USG) through CDC, American Association of Blood Bank (AABB) and
Field Epidemiology Lab Training Program (FELTP) are planning to conduct a study
to establish the current pattern of blood use in transfusion facilities,
quantification of national blood demand and estimation of actual national blood
needs in Tanzania. The overall goal of this project is to determine how much
blood the NBTS should collect annually.
