and sectors. Projects can span a wide range of areas, including manufacturing,
technical innovation, business processes, IT, social sciences, design, and

Number
of award(s):
There
are no pre-set limits to the number of awards available. The Mitacs Research
Council will decide the number of fellowship awards at the time of review,
dependent upon quality of submissions and available funding in each province.
Duration
of award(s):
 These
PhD fellowships are awarded for three years.
What
does it cover?
The
total grant for each PhD student is $90,000 over 3 years and the partner
organization must contribute a minimum of $36,000 over 3 years. Contributions
from the partner organization must be sent to Mitacs annually ($12,000 per
annum). If requested on the proposal form, up to 2 invoices for $6,000 per year
may be granted. Upon Mitacs receipt of the annual partner contribution,
the grant will be delivered annually as a research grant to the fellow’s
academic supervisor. The $30,000 annual grant must support a $25,000
annual stipend for the PhD student, with $5,000 per year available to support
research costs related to the approved project. For projects with high
research support costs, the stipend may be reduced on an exception basis,
to a minimum of $20,000 with supporting information in the proposal. The
same PhD student must receive the stipend for all three years, as the
award is non-transferable and cannot be shared amongst multiple students. Award
funds are limited to supporting the direct costs of research as directed by
NSERC.
