Methods or strategies for mobilizing communities for self-financed and sustainable projects

Carrying out community self
financed and sustainable projects come with several challenges. In other to
effectively mobilize a community for this type of project, there are several
processes that must be followed in mobilizing a community for self-financed
projects. The mobilization process must be carried out in trust, honesty,
and community inclusion. To people to be mobilized in the process must be
made to understand and feel a sense of ownership in the process, this can only
be achieves if the process is carried out in such a way that the people feel
that their opinion is given serious consideration to a very reasonable degree.
There must be a very viable channel that is geared toward receiving input from
the community because listening to their views is an integral part of a project’s
sustainability and the community members that are to carry out the
implementation must be made to see the project as their own property.

Among other ways, the
following have proven to be effective measures for mobilising a community for self
financed and sustainable environmental projects;
Effective Orientation of the Community
Carrying out an effective orientation of the purpose
and benefits of the project can trigger the willingness of the community
members to actively participate in the project. Orientation of the community on
the process, stages and purpose is a great way in mobilizing the community for
a self financed and sustainable environmental project. This can be done in a
number of ways, including written communication, television, radio, or an
organized meeting. Meetings are more personal and conducive to building relationships.
The orientation should be carried out in a way that encourages communication
between the organisers and the community members to foster clarity of purpose.
Arranging a Meeting with
Interested Stakeholders
For the success of a community self-financed and
sustainable project to be successful, interested stakeholder must be carried
along through constant update of the process. This can be done through holding
a meeting with them at various stages of the project. Organising a meeting with
the people in the community and ensuring that respectable people in the
community are in attendance can add credibility to its agenda. This may
happen through a church, school, tribe, or other local group.  Utilizing
community leaders also increases the chances of reaching a cross-section of the
population and not just a narrow representation. It is essential that all
members of the community receive word about the mobilization process and how
they can be involved. Outreach to those who are isolated, vulnerable or
considered marginal is critical. For this meeting to be effective and to be
taken seriously by the community members, traditional, political and other
community leaders must be involved in the planning and execution of the meeting
or duly represented by trustworthy people.
Setting Viable Goals for
the Meeting
The meeting should be
planned in such a way the every stakeholder clearly understands the goal of the
meeting. The goal of the meet should be clearly stated in its simplest terms so
that everyone irrespective of their educational background clearly understands
the goal of the meeting. The goals of the meeting must be carefully considered
and reflected in the agenda by the person in charge of the
mobilization. To ensure effective mobilization, community leaders can
provide assistance presenting the information in a culturally appropriate
manner. Some of the community leaders may be chosen to convey topics with which
they are familiar. During this meeting, it is important to solicit the
input of the community. The organisers must understand the need of the people
and be the basis for the goals of the meeting.
The meeting should be an
avenue to educate the people on the importance of the projects are to the
community, how to actualize them and also an opportunity to learn about the
strengths and resources of the community. It will be important to define mutual
goals and develop a plan as to how to reach these goals. This will include
organizing individuals to work together and coordinate services. People from
different professions and interest groups in the community at different
capabilities must be called into action in the planning.
Create a Good Communication Channel
Communication between
stakeholders and different groups in carrying the project should be well
planned and made very active. This will help to identify ongoing ways to
communicate. Rather than having large meetings, cluster meetings of project staff, community leaders and
community members working on similar tasks are more manageable and
efficient. The groups should begin team building with all team members
(project staff, community leaders and community members). It is vital that
marginalized and vulnerable people are included in these teams.
