This
position is responsible for liaising with the Government of Botswana in matters
related to the Gaborone Declaration (GD) follow-up process, and to represent CI
in the country. It will also play an active role in developing and cultivating
relationships with regional policy bodies such as the SADC, UNDP, World Bank
etc., especially their Gaborone offices. The incumbent will support the
Gaborone Declaration process through comparative policy research in fields
relevant to the Gaborone Declaration (i.e. Natural Capital Accounting, Green
Economies, REDD, PES, CBNRM, environment friendly agriculture, indigenous
people rights and participation in decision-making, etc), the identification of
opportunities for policy improvement, exchange of experiences among countries,
the research and preparation of materials for the Gaborone Declaration website,
and related policy briefs.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Liaise with the Government of Botswana and
other national and regional organizations (e.g. SADC, World Bank, UNDP) on
matters related to the implementation of the Gaborone Declaration
commitments. - Analyze national and sub-national legal,
policy and institutional frameworks and conditions related to the
mainstreaming of Natural Capital Accounting, biodiversity conservation and
Green Economies into national development for the identification of gaps
and proposition of innovations to address these. - Support regional information exchange on Green
Economies, for example through researching and preparing information for
the Gaborone Declaration website. - Help prepare and participate in national and
regional meetings to support the implementation of Gaborone Declaration
commitments and related capacity building and information exchange. - Support fundraising efforts for the regional
and country programs in fields related to Gaborone Declaration, Green
Economies, natural resource management, climate change adaptation and
mitigation, and related topics. - Other duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Masters or PhD in Environmental, Political or
Social Sciences, with two years experience in environmental policy. - Solid knowledge and experience in policies in
environment or natural resource management in the Southern African
regional context. - Excellent interpersonal and negotiation
skills. - Experience in the use of Microsoft Office and
other common office software packages.
Preferred
- Fluency and excellent writing skills in
English. Ability to read and work in other languages of Gaborone
Declaration signatories (French, Portuguese) is a distinct advantage. - Experience in fundraising and the management
of institutional partnership is an advantage.

- The person in this position will work out of
CI-Botswana’s Gaborone office that will most likely be located within a
partner organization. - The person in this position may be required to
travel in the southern Africa region for periods of up to a week during which
time regular office hours (9:00 – 17:00hrs) may not be observed and hours
of work are flexible according to the work to be done. Accommodation,
meals and incidentals will be provided by CI during duty travel.
