Living Oceans Society Researcher/Geographic Information Systems Technician – Temporary Position Job Vacancy in Canada

Contract Term: 40 hours/week for 11 weeks
Starting Date: Mid – July 2011
Salary: $20 per hour

Position:
Living Oceans Society is looking for a self-starter who enjoys working with people to design and produce maps that meet their needs. Much of the work will involve researching data sources, requesting and obtaining spatial data, both marine and terrestrial, and creating reports to describe research results and mapping possibilities. GIS mapping experience and skills are necessary. The position requires independent work.

Specific Responsibilities include:
• Survey campaigners to gather mapping and data needs, summarize findings.
• Research potential data sources, request and/or retrieve spatial data from repositories.
• Follow-up on data requests by phone and/or email.
• Design and prepare GIS based maps for a range of campaigns and projects.
• Produce presentation quality maps, for PowerPoint, web and/or print.
• Prepare GIS metadata.

Qualifications:

Educational/Technical Requirements
• Experience that demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills
• Some training in Geographic Information Systems, especially ESRI products.
• Experience that demonstrates basic mapping skills in ArcView.
• Interest and/or post secondary education in science; Geography/Ecology/Environmental Studies is preferred.
• Ability to design and organize a project, take the initiative and create results, and know when to ask for help.

• Good sense of aesthetics, especially related to presentation quality maps.
