LEAF – Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests Education and Outreach Intern Job Vacancy in Toronto, Ontario


LEAF is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection and
enhancement of the urban forest. Our planting and education programs have been
connecting residents to the urban forest for over two decades.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and capable Education and Outreach
Intern. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional organizational and
interpersonal skills, experience in planning events, demonstrated knowledge of
arboriculture, and superior communication skills.

This position is funded in part through the Eco Canada Internship Program.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
• recently graduated from a post-secondary institution
• 30 years of age or younger
• a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status

Overview of Position:
The Education and Outreach Intern will work in a team environment to support
two of LEAF’s programs – our Education and Outreach Program and our Residential
Planting Program (RPP) . The list below outlines the major tasks related to the
position; however additional tasks may be assigned as needed.

Education and Outreach Operations (75%)
• help create planting and stewardship plans for public restoration sites
• plan and deliver events that engage the general public and school groups in
planting and stewardship
• plan and deliver educational workshops for both adult and child audiences on
various urban forestry topics
• represent LEAF and share information about our programs at community events
• provide volunteer coordination and support
• document planting/stewardship events through photos, social media and blogs
• data entry and metrics tracking
• general administrative support as needed

RPP Office Operations (25%)
• Front-line client communication and education
• Carry out various administrative duties including database entry, queries and
reporting, client communications, consultation bookings, financial
record-keeping, client invoicing, processing payments and banking
• Receive and process utility locates
• Assist in continually improving use of technology including GIS systems,
satellite imagery and database/reporting
• Provide additional support to Residential Planting Program Coordinator as
needed

Qualifications:
• Recent graduate from a university or college program in urban forestry,
environmental studies or related field
• Skills and experience in the fields of arboriculture and/or urban forestry
• Thorough knowledge of native trees and shrubs
• ISA arborist certification or currently meet criteria to write ISA arborist
certification exam
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service
• Ability to determine priorities, adhere to deadlines and multi-task
• Attention to detail and superior organization skills
• Creative problem solving skills
• Experience in public speaking and public outreach/education
• Experience in event planning
• Proven ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, emphasis on Access
• Must be able to handle physical demands of outdoor work in inclement weather
• Must have weather-appropriate work clothing and steel-toed boots
• Full “G” driver’s license and clean driving record required
• Access to personal vehicle an asset
• Experience driving a cube truck an asset
• Emergency First Aid + CPR and AED Certification an asset
• Must meet requirements for Eco Canada Internship Program

This is a full time (35-40 hours per week) position. This is a one year
contract with opportunity for renewal. Compensation is commensurate with
experience.
