Langford Conservancy,Farmland Protector: Financial & Marketing Whiz Jobs in Canada

Position: Farmland Protector:
Financial & Marketing Whiz
Type: 4 month contract / paid internship
Organization: Langford Conservancy
Location: Brantford, near
Hamilton, Ontario
The
Langford Conservancy is a land trust
that has preserved a heritage schoolhouse. We are seeking an enthusiastic
individual to help us to share information about the best practices of
protecting farmland with local landowners, and new farmers who are seeking
land. The p

osition entails creating and promoting alternative financing and
marketing tools to protect farmland.

These
tools include 1) the use of protective covenants (conservation
easements
) and eco-gifts, 2) the purchase of farmland by a land
trust, with long term leases and ground leases
for new farmers, and 3) community bonds.
The
Langford Conservancy is preparing a “community bond” package to fund the
purchase of a farm for new organic farmers. Community bonds are a way to invest
ethically and locally.
We’ll
work as a team to prepare our community bond package, and market it. You’ll be
involved with: 1) developing and marketing a community bond package to purchase
farmland, 2) alternative approaches to the ownership of farmland, 3) creative
solutions for retiring farmers to protect farmland and sell their land for a
fair price and 4) best practices by land trusts to enable new organic farmers
to access protected farmland.
Our
focus will be community based outreach to help revitalize farming communities,
and to promote food sovereignty. In particular, you’ll be working with 1)
land-owners who are interested in protecting their land, 2) new farmers to help
them to learn about alternative approaches to farm ownership and 3) the design
and marketing of a community bond investment package to enable the Langford Conservancy
to purchase a farm.
