Lagos State government announces increment in ‘LAGBUS’ fare

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved an increase in bus services fare on all routes run by Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL).

The average increase of 46% will take effect on 1 August 2020, as reported by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in a statement on Monday.

Mr Sanwo-Olu agreed to the bus fare review following a passionate appeal by the bus operator on the need to continue its service following the adverse effect of the COVID19 pandemic on public bus transport, the statement added.

“Besides, the Governor also approved LBSL’s request to increase the number of passengers per bus from 20 to 42 in strict observance of updated COVID19 protocol as directed by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in the operation of public transport, whilst ensuring all other measures are in place.”

Earlier observation on adherence to the loading capacity of buses in the state noted that LBSL buses had all their seats occupied by passengers, but no standing was allowed in the buses.

Kolawole Ojelabi, spokesperson for LAMATA, claimed in the statement that LBSL had argued that transporting no more than 20 passengers per bus per trip had resulted in only 14 per cent of the use of the bus load factor, leading to a 72% drop in revenue while running costs remained fairly the same.

According to Mr. Ojelabi, LBSL busses are the successor to LAGBUS.

“It stated that the fare increase would improve LBSL’s operational efficiency and place the bus operating company on the path to sustainability in the medium to long term,” the statement added.

The pre-COVID bus fares for LSBL busses were between N100 and N200 depending on the route. With the acceptance of an average rise of 46% in bus fares, commuters can pay more.

The tariffs would rise by 46% to between N150 and N300.

In addition to the rise in bus fares, the governor also granted LBSL busses access to all the allocated bus lanes in the State of Lagos, the lanes devoted exclusively to Primero Bus Services Limited, the Bus Rapid Transit ( BRT) bus operators.

LAMATA spokesperson said that access to restricted lanes would make journey times for LSBL busses quicker and more predictable.

Primero Bus Services announced a 50% rise in fares in May.
