1) Assist in the Production of Human Rights
Content:
The trainer will work in the newsroom of a local newspaper. Their
job will be to work side-by-side with local journalists, researching story
ideas, and ensuring that they are covering the story with integrity and a firm
knowledge of human rights and good governance. Their job is NOT to write or
voice the story—it is merely to guide and assist the local journalist to report
on human rights. jhr’s goal is to transfer knowledge—not to do the work
ourselves.
2) Deputy News Editor Role: The trainer will participate in editorial meetings at the local
newspaper. By participating in story assignment and the news process, the
trainer will help add a human rights and good governance angle to many general
news stories.
Conduct Informal Workplace Workshops: Workshops will be held within the newsroom of the local newspaper. Each
session will focus on techniques necessary to report effectively on human
rights issues. The training will be inclusive and respectful of differing
levels of ability. Workshops will cover a variety of topics, from basic journalism
skills to different human rights issues. Topics will be tailored to the needs
of those whom the trainer works with.
Rights Media Development: The trainer will work alongside their placement to develop a series
rights focused article that will raise human rights issues relevant to the
local community.
Special Projects Development: The trainer will research and develop kits for reporting on specific
human rights issues, as determined by the host organizations (assessment).
Canadian Engagement: The trainer is required to post one journal entry and one article on
jhr’s Abroad Website at least every two weeks.
Qualifications:
  • A postsecondary degree or diploma in
    journalism
  • Experience working in print or radio
    production
  • Experience or demonstrable interest in
    teaching and training (educational and media houses who requested)
  • Knowledge of human rights
  • Excellent personal skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Knowledge of the country of placement
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Out of school;
  • Must not have previously participated in a
    government-funded internship program;
  • Between the ages of 19 and 30;
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
