Job Vacancy in Canada for Litigation Counsel in Alberta Securities Commission

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is empowered to take certain actions to protect the integrity of Alberta’s capital market, which includes a world-class oil and gas industry. We are looking for a skilled professional to join our team as:
LITIGATION COUNSEL

The Enforcement division enforces Alberta securities laws by discovering, investigating, and prosecuting breaches of those laws with an eye to both stopping current misconduct and preventing future misconduct. Through prompt, fair, and visible enforcement action, the division seeks to protect the investing public, foster investor confidence, and promote the integrity of the Alberta capital market
Reporting directly to the Director of Enforcement, this position will focus on reviewing and prosecuting alleged violations of the Alberta Securities Act. This includes reviewing investigation reports, developing and evaluating the case, and, when appropriate, conducting a hearing before a panel of the Alberta Securities Commission or a trial in the Provincial Court of Alberta. Litigation Counsel also handle any appeals to the Commission and the Court of Appeal, and appear on applications before the Executive Director of the Commission or in the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench.

Specific responsibilities include: reviewing investigation briefs; working collaboratively with investigators and investor witnesses to prepare files for hearings; drafting notices of hearing, preparing written argument; making interim applications where urgent action is necessary; preparing witnesses, lay and expert; attempting to settle matters when appropriate through negotiation; conducting hearings; conducting trials; and responding to appeals.

The ideal candidate must: have a law degree; be an active member of the Law Society of Alberta; have 8 to 12 years of experience conducting trials, hearings and appeals; be self motivated; possess superior analytical skills, and possess strong verbal and written advocacy skills, a solid professional work ethic, and the ability to work in a team environment.
