Introductory Concept of Soil Erosion

The environment is fragile and delicate, natural
resources, which man is expected to protect are lost. Today, man has the power
to alter the natural state of the environment, but because he cannot be separated
from the environment, he goes about this routine life and style while
struggling for survival.

Following the trends in urbanization, our environments
have been greatly degraded, which makes it unhealthy for habitation. Instead of
man to enjoy the environment he rather endures it. This calls for a proper
attention at the environment in order to prevent environment disaster like
flooding, soil pollution, and other to associated environment problems.
However, various activities of man lead to erosion
which destroys lives and properties in various parts of the world. This
suffices to say that without the land (soil), plants cannot survive, without
plants life cannot be sustained and without land, man cannot survive.
(Umoru, 2001) observed that man has contributed to
this problem in many ways by constructing road without drainage system,
resulting in the washing away of the top soil, flooding etc?
In fact, land erosion has lead to the pollution of
water bodies meant for drinking and other domestic purposes. Sometimes erosion
washes some poisonous chemicals deposited by man in his environment thereby
killing some aquatic lives that are meant for human consumption.
Therefore in other to check the problem of land
erosion in man’s environment, efforts should be made, using the available and
affordable materials to study and access the prevailing situation so as to
provide a scientific, satisfactory and lasting solution to avert its health
implication.
However, in an attempted to control the erosion in the
affected areas, by filling empty cement sack with sand to block the flow of
water, people inhale dangerous chemicals and most of these chemicals are being
washed into water bodies masking it unwholesome both for man and livestock.
