Introduction

Malaria can be defined as a tropical disease caused
by one of the protozoan of the genius plasmodium and it is carried by infected
female mosquito of the genus anopheles (Churchill pocket medical dictionary).

According to Olayemi (2006) malaria assumes a
deadly dimension when it occurs especially in pregnancy though could be
prevented, treated and cured.
From previous research work on malaria, it has been
discovered that malaria causes a greater economic lose than any other tropical
disease. The total estimated annual incidence of malaria cases in the world
amount to a hundred million and these cases involve huge cost in the terms of
money in their treatment, the effect of malaria in pregnancy should not
therefore be overlooked. Malaria as a disease is caused by a protozoa which
invades the blood and destroys the red blood cell. It manifests itself in
different form depending on the exact species as there are four different types
that affect man.
The predominance of the disease varies from one
country to another. In Nigeria plasmodium, falciparum is the chief cause of
malaria in adult. The vector is the female anopheles mosquito.
Malaria causes varying degrees of fever. The
patient may be very ill, rigor sweating, having headache, joint pain and
anorexia (Toohey, 2007).
These are common symptoms. There may be
gastrointestinal symptom such as vomiting and diarrhea. When there is excessive
destruction of the red blood cell, the patient may be Jaundiced and anaemic (Beneth,
2002).
Malaria is the major cause of increased morbidity
and mortality rate in the tropical regions of the world as a result of its
repeated occurrences.
