The
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) – a member of the CGIAR
Consortium (www.cgiar.org) – develops technologies,
innovative methods, and new knowledge that better enable farmers, especially
smallholders, to make agriculture competitive and profitable as well as
sustainable and resilient. CIAT conducts research for development in tropical
regions of Latin America, Africa, and Asia (www.ciat.cgiar.org).
The
Scholarship
As
part of capacity building in Rwanda, CIAT is see

king applications for a PhD
candidate to join her research team in the areas of Agriculture with focus on
gender, employment and agricultural commercialization of non-traditional export
crops. The successful candidate will work under the joint supervision of CIAT
researchers and any of the regional Universities at which the candidate will be
enrolled.

We
are seeking motivated scientists interested in a doctorate degree in development
work (agricultural economics, agribusiness, policy, rural development and
sociology and related areas). Our project research aims are to investigate the
issues of gender dynamics in Agriculture as they relate to employment and
income generation within the non-traditional agricultural exports. This is part
of trans-continental research work focused on sharing experiences, results and
lessons to support women’s rural livelihoods in the developing world.
The
scholarship is research oriented but will also offer opportunities for
participation in training courses to support the candidate conduct research and
share research results in regional and international regional forum.
The
Candidate:
Applicants
should have a strong interest in quantitative and qualitative research with
statistical techniques, data handling skills, economics, agricultural markets,
research management and other socioeconomic areas. They should also have
excellent team spirit and attitude, communication skills and capacity to work under
pressure with minimal supervision and be results oriented.
General
Responsibilities
  • Conduct
    Ph.D. research on gender, employment and agricultural commercialization of
    non‑ traditional export crops;
  • Publish
    and disseminate evidence for influencing policy and practice;
  • Participate
    in efforts to integrate best practices in gender, policy and development
    and to generate evidence for scaling out;Work closely with supervisor and
    the research team to deliver on the project objectives
Requirements
  • Master
    of Arts or Master of Science in Social Science (Rural Sociology, Gender
    and Development, Agricultural Economics, Social Anthropology, etc.) or
    related field with application to agriculture or rural development.
  • Minimum
    of 2 years’ experience after Master’s degree and an interest in empirical
    research
  • A
    proven research record of peer-reviewed outputs on gender and agriculture
  • Basic
    skills in study design, quantitative and qualitative analytic methods
  • Ability
    to establish and maintain partnerships in project implementation areas
  • Familiarity
    with aspects of marketing systems in Rwanda;
  • Strong
    English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in French is
    an advantage)
  • Willingness
    to travel frequently to rural areas in Rwanda countryside.
Terms
of Scholarship:
  • This
    is a national opportunity and only Rwanda nationals are eligible.
  • The
    successful candidate will be based at CIAT-Rwanda country office in Kigali
    but enrolled at any of the universities in the region.
  • Duration
    of scholarship is a maximum of 3 years (subject to performance progress).
    Expected start date is 1st August 2017. A modest stipend will be provided
    during the study period.
  • CIAT
