Specifically, our staff offer trainings in open source tools and systems because they promote interactive communities and shared ownership. iLab hosts local meet-ups as well as local and international organizations holding events that are in-line with iLab’s mission.
Position Description
iLab Liberia has grown significantly since first opening its doors in May 2011. iLab holds between 6 and 10 events each month, forms new partnerships weekly, and hosts visiting scholars and external workshops on a regular basis. With all of this activity, iLab needs more trainers to carry out additional events and assist in those events where more experts are needed. iLab is seeking a skilled IT enthusiast to assist in current iLab trainings and eventually become a lead trainer for ongoing and new iLab courses.
Major Duties and responsibilities
Training and capacity development
• Become proficient in technical requirements to lead introductory courses in a range of topics at iLab, including social media as well as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and more
• Assist iLab’s senior trainers in developing curriculum and materials for iLab trainings, and dedicate sufficient time to acquiring knowledge needed to support the lead instructor
• Assist/co-lead trainings at iLab when requested by senior trainers and/or executive director
• Provide one-on-one assistance to iLab users during the lab’s open hours and trainings
• Participate in trainings for iLab staff by iLab senior management and visiting scholars
• Work with iLab staff to maintain the lab during working hours. This entails:
o Ensuring that all users are following the lab’s guidelines when they are on the computers
o Keeping the computers virus-free and alerting the executive director to any problems with the equipment
o Demonstrating proficiency in the setup of each computer, how to operate both the server and workstation computers
o Making sure the FrontlineSMS setup is functional and able to send SMS blasts to participants about iLab events
Website and social media content
• Write blog posts regularly
• Provide descriptions of past, current and upcoming events
• Add resources and links that iLab users may find helpful
• Tweet daily about iLab events, users, and relevant information
Other Duties
• Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Completed or ongoing University degree in Information Technology, Communications or related degrees is preferred; technical institute degree is also acceptable
• Commitment to iLab’s goals and objectives
• Excellent proficiency with computers and information technologies
• Fast learner who picks up new skills and applies them quickly; learning on the go is a must
• Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
• Team player and also has leadership potential
• Comfortable and competent as a teacher
• Works well without constant supervision
• Highly self-motivated, proactive, innovative and eager to work
• Commitment to abide by high moral standards and combat corruption proactively
