IIASA Postdoctoral Scholarships for International Applicants in Austria

Each year, the International Institute for
Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) offers four postdoctoral scholarships. Candidates
are required to develop and submit a research proposal that interfaces their
own research interests with the research agenda of one of the various
activities pursued at IIASA. The typical period of IIASA-funded
postdoctoral support is 12–24 months. Preference will be given to
applicants who are nationals of countries where IIASA has a National Member
Organization and who have held a doctoral degree for less than five years at
the application deadline.

Study Subject (s): Scholars are expected to conduct their own research within one of
IIASA’s research programs or special projects on topics closely related to
IIASA’s agenda.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing postdoctoral
research program at IIASA.

Eligibility: Candidates should have a PhD at the time of taking up the appointment
and are expected to have a proven record of research accomplishments, and a
solid working knowledge of English. The typical period of IIASA-funded
postdoctoral support is 12–24 months. Preference will be given to applicants
who are nationals of countries where IIASA has a National Member Organization
and who have held a doctoral degree for less than five years at the application
deadline. The degree may or may not have been officially awarded at the time of
submitting an application; a letter from the individual’s university asserting
that he or she has completed all of the requirements for the degree is
satisfactory for establishing eligibility for the position.
Scholarship Open for International Students: International applicants can apply for these scholarships. Preference
will be given to applicants who are nationals of countries where IIASA has a
National Member Organization: Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Egypt,
Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway,
Pakistan, Korea, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine and USA.
Scholarship Description: IIASA provides full funding for 4 postdoctoral researchers each year.
Scholars are expected to conduct their own research within one of IIASA’s
research programs or special projects on topics closely related to IIASA’s
agenda. The goals of the IIASA Postdoctoral Program are: To encourage and
promote the development of young researchers and offer them the opportunity to
further their careers by gaining hands-on professional research experience in a
highly international scientific environment; and To enrich IIASA’s intellectual
environment and help achieve research program goals.
Number of award(s): Every year 4 postdoctoral scholarships are available.
Duration of award(s): The typical period of IIASA-funded postdoctoral support is 12–24
months.
What does it cover? Accepted candidates are offered:
-An allowance for relocation expenses to and from Laxenburg
-Limited support for monthly business travel
-A scholarship that is internationally competitive and commensurate with
experience and qualifications. It is exempt from taxation in Austria, but
subject to the principle of income aggregation.
-All appointees are eligible for either state or private health insurance.
Selection Criteria: The quality of the proposed research.
-The relevance for ongoing or planned research activities at IIASA. Proposals
relevant to two or more IIASA programs are possible and encouraged.
-Candidates’ academic merit and potential for successful research (graduate
record, publication record, and letters of recommendation).
-A demonstrated ability to think and work independently and in a team.
-Candidates’ depth of experience with interdisciplinary research.
-The degree to which a candidate would contribute to the long-term balance of
postdoctoral positions in terms of programs, gender, and country of origin.

Scholarship Application Deadline: Applications can be submitted throughout the year. Review of all
incoming applications will take place twice a year; upcoming deadlines are 1
December 2013 and 30 June 2014.
