ICPC reveals how constituency projects swallowed N2 trillion “without results”

Since 2000, an estimated N2 trillion has been spent on constituency projects in Nigeria without commensurate grassroots development, the anti-graft body, ICPC said.

His chairman, Bolaji Owasanoye, said this on Sunday at the induction in Abuja of newly-qualified members of the Nigerian  Institute of Quantity Surveyors(NIQS).

Mr Owasanoye said the commission would not hesitate to prosecute any contractor that failed to perform on funded projects, including accomplices, according to a declaration signed by its spokesman, Rasheedat Okoduwa.

The chairman spoke as the guest speaker at a lecture entitled, “The Role of Quantity Surveyors in the Fight against Corruption, Especially in the Construction Industry”.

While speaking about the Commission’s ongoing monitoring of consistuency projects in 12 states, he said “it was not to witch-hunt anyone”.

The chairman said on April 2 the commission started the initiative of the Constituency Projects Tracking Group (CPTG) to ensure proper implementation of funded projects in different constituencies across the nation.

Mr Owasanoye said that the initiative had already produced positive results as some contractors had returned to the site to complete unfinished projects.

However, the ICPC chairman encouraged NIQS members to enter the battle against corruption.

“You play a critical role in the construction industry which is very important to the development of any nation, as the sector creates a lot of jobs and you are inevitable in the society,” he said
