cyclists in Metro Vancouver.
Bike Education Instructors teach HUB courses in schools, community centers and
other public settings. Courses are run throughout Metro Vancouver and include
both in-class and on-road instruction, and cover topics such as improving
cycling skills and confidence riding on the road. Classes are offered on
weekdays and some weekends and evenings, and can be one or two hour intros, or
full day programs.
You are someone who:
• Is a trained and experienced instructor or facilitator;
• Believes in the benefits of cycling, and demonstrates proficient city cycling
skills;
• Can confidently and enthusiastically instruct to groups of children, youth
and/or adults of various backgrounds;
• Is flexible and motivated to work as much as possible during peak
instructional periods;
• Will proactively communicate with HUB supervisors to ensure services are
delivered smoothly and to a high quality;
Working under the direction of the Bike Education Program Manager and Program
Coordinator, cycling instructors work on a casual, as-needed basis, and will
typically be informed about their schedule 2 weeks in advance. It is the
employee’s responsibility to maintain their updated availability in our
scheduling system. Ideal candidates are individuals with flexible availability
that fits with part-time work that fluctuates in different seasons (although
courses are run in most months of the year).

Responsibilities:
• Becoming completely familiar with the HUB curricula, equipment and materials,
and methods for effective course delivery.
• Setting up and delivering courses in a professional, reliable, enthusiastic
and fun manner.
• Encouraging participants to see cycling as a viable mode of transportation.
• Doing basic on-site mechanical checks to ensure all bikes and equipment are
functional for instruction.
• Communicating consistently and promptly with supervisors regarding
scheduling, course feedback, and any incidents that occur while on-site.
• Using language and actions aligned with HUB Cycling’s values and positions
relating to cycling.
Required Qualifications:
• Experience with group instruction, facilitation and experience teaching
adults, children, or youth.
• Flexibility, interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm appropriate to the nature
of this position.
• Knowledge of commuter cycling including being a proficient cyclist and having
a good understanding of the Metro Vancouver cycling network.
• Clear criminal record check and first aid certification.
• Successful applicants must be Bike Right certified. The next certification
course is offered on August 20-21 and those who wish to apply and have not
already passed the course need to keep this weekend available. Additional
on-site curriculum training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Driver’s licence and ability to drive a full-size van for equipment
transportation.
• Commitment to and enjoyment of bicycling in the city.
Terms:
• Hours will vary seasonally and according to availability.
• The majority of courses run from April-October.
• Wage starts at $17.55 and increases to $22.55 after a probationary period has
passed, plus 4% in lieu of vacation time
• Most own and carry a cell phone during on-bike courses.
