Hostel accommodation

Hostel accommodation in the opinion of Ezukwu (2009)
can be referred to as a resident for students; hostel accommodation is place
set aside for students to live which is in most cases situated within an
institution of learning in the form of hostels or hall of residence. The
essence of hostel accommodation is to provide a place for students to live
outside their homes since in most cases students (in higher institutions)
attend institution in town (cities) away from their hometowns. Hostel
accommodation serves as shelter to students from the sun, rain, heat and cold.
The quality of hostel accommodation is instrumental to the safety, the level of
comfort and students’ academic performance.

According to Onyegiri (2014), in higher institution
hostel facilities help to provide easy and affordable accommodation for
students and also encourage effective teaching and learning. Ozioko (2007)
affirmed that adequate hostel facility can help in the attainment of
educational objectives. However, this cannot be achieved unless hostel
accommodation meet up with a certain standard which include safe drinking
water, good sanitation reliable electricity supply, high standard sanitary
conveniences, the availability of affordable and accessible means of
transportation.
Hostel accommodations which are supposed to improve
the quality of life of students can lead to health hazards, aggressive
behaviour among student and as a result act as a threat to students’ academic
performance if the hostel facilities are substandard (Ozioko, 2007). Hostel
accommodation directly or indirectly affects the behaviours of students
positively or negatively. This is in line with the assertion of Omu (2013) who
stated that the behaviour of human is fundamentally related to their physical
environment. The behaviour of an individual is affected positively or
negatively by the environment and this is the same with the quality of hostel
accommodation of students.
