 1 year part time contract (with possible extension) starting February 1, 2012

Many people have inspired, powerful ideas that could make our world better. But
the challenges of our time are not being solved by people working alone or in
regimented silos. Organizations, companies, governments and individuals have
limited capacity to address complex issues faced by our societies and planet.

The HiVE is a 9,000 square foot space located at 128 West Hastings Street,
which just opened its doors in June, 2011. Our mission is to catalyze a
community of changemakers by actively hosting a co-working and event space,
fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration among this diverse
community. At the HiVE, a diversity of individuals, small organizations and
businesses can work together in evolving ideas into actions to address societal
issues in meaningful, creative ways.

We’re seeking an Executive Director to lead the HiVE through its next phase of
growth and development. Recognizing that the HiVE is a young start up, the
focus of the work will be on creating community partnerships, sales and
marketing.

DUTIES:

Leadership

• Develop and cultivate partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders
including the changemaker community, both profit and non-profit, City of
Vancouver, VEDC, and neighbouring community.
• Represent the HiVE in the community — actively pursue promotional
opportunities for the HiVE
• Provide leadership to staff and volunteers around the development of
programming aligned with the mandate of the organization
• Develop an operational plan for fiscal 2012-2013

Sales and Marketing

• Working with staff and volunteer communications director, coordinate and
implement a multi-dimensional sales, marketing and communications plan
• Attract significant new traffic and tenants
• Participate actively in ‘group’ sales

Human Resources

• Oversee work of Operations Manager and Assistant Manager
• Develop human resources policy and practices

Financials

• Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the
organization.
• Manage funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor
the monthly cash flow of the organization.
• Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and
expenditures of the organization.
• Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate.

Board, Member and Volunteer Engagement

• Work with the board to create an effective governance body
• Work with the board to recruit new board members
• Work with staff to recruit and retain volunteers and interns

Project Management

• With input, develop a work plan to complete final stages of renovation
including upgraded lighting, sound attenuation and making the space fully
accessible.
• Hire and supervise contractors and/or volunteers to complete the work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to demonstrate alignment with the vision and mission of the HiVE
• Successful experience in previous business operations, ideally with a
start-up
• Experience working with not-for-profit organizations and volunteers
• Financial acumen
• Sales experience
• Experience with boards and governance
• Ability to lead and to work well with others
• Thrive on a challenge
