Greenpeace Canada is seeking an experienced communications professional to fill a vacancy in our Toronto office. If you enjoy the challenge of working in a dynamic and exciting environment, this position is for you.
Working closely with the Communications Director, your focus will be to increase the effectiveness of Greenpeace Canada’s communications and organizational profile by developing creative, cutting-edge communications strategies and overseeing their execution by supervising three Media and Public Relations Officers.
You possess a keen understanding of environmental issues, a broad knowledge of political and social affairs, and a sound news judgment. You’re an engaging storyteller who knows how to motivate people through words and images. You’re a leader who enjoys working in a team environment that emphasizes teambuilding and mentorship.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Work closely with organization leadership to help guide and realize an expanded presence in the news media;
2. Oversee development of communications strategies, objectives and plans;
3. Train and encourage others to play an effective role in external communications of Greenpeace and its campaigns;
4. Assist in the recruitment, motivation and retention of high-quality, diverse media staff;
5. Ensure that the Media and Public Relations team plays a key role in the development of project, campaign and organizational messaging and ensure consistency in external messaging;
6. Coordinate communications between the Media and Public Relations team and the Director of Communications, other Communications staff, Senior Management Team, Campaigns, Actions, Volunteers and Development staff, media staff at Greenpeace International and key Greenpeace national offices, and external project agencies and consultants;
7. Develop effective project reporting and evaluation mechanisms;
8. Apprise the Communications Director and Executive Director of potential public relations controversies and help Communications Director manage media crises and public statements on sensitive issues;
9. Serve as organization spokesperson when required;
10. Write statements, op-eds and other media materials and rigorously edit and approve all public statements and news releases;
11. Develop and manage the budget of the media program and monitor expenses;
12. Ensure that media lists are updated regularly and shared internally, and develop and maintain media monitoring systems and analysis;
13. Develop and execute public engagement strategies;
14. Other tasks as directed by the Communications Director.
Essential Qualities and Skills:
• Degree in communications or journalism;
• 5 years minimum experience in the field of communications, either as a journalist or communications specialist;
• Demonstrated leadership ability and/or management experience;
• Strong understanding of traditional and social media;
• Knowledge and understanding of diverse media and community groups, including ethnic, youth and business media, and multicultural communities;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French (mandatory);
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines and deal with high stress situations and long hours;
• Flexibility to travel when necessary;
• Strong understanding of public engagement communication tools, including social media and marketing;
• An understanding of photography, video, design and printing;
• Knowledge of and interest in environmental issues, including forest conservation, climate change and energy, sustainable agriculture and oceans;
• Commitment to and understanding of Greenpeace’s campaign goals and a broad understanding of the role of non-governmental organizations in public discourse.
Desirable qualities and skills:
• Experience in an NGO or not-for-profit sector;
• Strong team-building and interpersonal skills;
• Knowledge of Canadian politics, both federal and provincial.
