After the final of the second division league, Gasogi United and Heroes FC were promoted to the Azam Rwanda Premier League.
Marcel Lomami’s Gasogi set the final date with Heroes after seeing Sorwathe 2-1 over her semi-final tie’s two legs. In the final match on Wednesday, the two sides played a 1-all draw, Gasogi advanced courtesy of their first-leg victory last week.
Finally, on Wednesday, misfiring Sorwathe have themselves to blame after squandering several chances – including a missed penalty by Barak Irakiza in the 57th minute – that might have earned them a historic ticket to the topflight league.
Striker Yves Habimana had set Gasogi ahead on the half-hour mark, and Télesphore Nshimiyimana did not equalize until the 64th minute.
Heroes also landed their promotion to first division football next season in another exciting semi-final after their 3-1 defeat in the return leg to Etoile de l’Est. Last week, Heroes won the first leg 2-0.
The final battle is planned for Saturday, July 27, at Kigali Stadium between the two newly promoted sides.
Heroes and Gasogi will replace Kirehe and Amagaju who at the end of last month’s 2018/2019 season were relegated from the topflight league.
The kick-off of the 2019/2020 Azam Rwanda Premier League comes up on September 13.
