More information about this project under the auspices of the Seattle-based NGO, Rwanda Girls Initiative is on the website: rwandagirlsinitiative.org

GGAST has attracted the most outstanding young women in Rwanda. One-third of them want to pursue careers in medicine; another third want to be engineers (including computer/IT); the balance want to be businesswomen, architects, pilots, etc. and one wants to be Rwanda’s first astronaut. The vision of RGi is to bring together a diverse group of girls from across the country and by having them work closely together with each other and with the teaching staff to prepare Rwanda’s next generation of leaders who will contribute to the development of this country which is still scarred by the trauman of the genocide 18 years ago. We have girls enrolled from all over Rwanda and we have girls enrolled who represent every possible socio-economic group, including the most vulnerable orphans of the genocide. Over 80% of the girls scored in Division I on the O level National Exams and fully 30% received a score of 7, the best possible score on that exam which marks the end of “middle school” in Rwanda.

The mission of the school is to prepare the girls to be successful on the Rwandan National Examination which is the gateway to tertiary education in East Africa. In addition to that, however, we believe that a number of our girls will be strong enough to attend universities around the world, including the USA, if they receive appropriate financial assistance.
