celebration. Fresh Roots stewards two ½ acre schoolyard market gardens
on school grounds in the heart of East and South Vancouver. The food
we grow is eaten in local school cafeterias, various Neighbourhood
House food security initiatives, and by neighbours. Our fields are
hands-on learning classrooms; engaging school communities and
residents of Vancouver in addressing food security, community health,
and vocational skills development.

The Position

The Youth Internship Coordinator will develop and activate summer
curriculum for secondary school students. The coordinator will work
closely with the Program Manager to build innovative programs to
prepare secondary school youth for leadership in their community,
employment, and furthering students food literacy skills. The program
will focus on the following three areas:

Update Leadership Curriculum
• In partnership with the Program Manager, update lesson plans for
youth 10-week internship program which will include growing food,
cooking, and food processing.
• Schedule field trips for secondary school youth.
• Coordinate meetings and interviews with community partners and food
systems leaders.
• Prepare materials for secondary school youth.

Supervise secondary school youth interns:
• Accompany youth through 10-week internship program.
• Supervise youth garden work, food processing, and cooking.
• Provide direct instruction of agricultural and ecological
conservation concepts and skills.
• Support development of secondary school youth leadership skills.
• Mentor youth to plan for school year gardens (opportunity for
independent study with on-going mentorship project through the school
year).
• Communicating with parents, as needed.
• Documenting daily activities and group dynamics.

Host Community Food Celebrations
• Work with youth to design and host Harvest Celebration.
• Assist with annual long table dinner.
• Design and promote three community potlucks.

Required Qualifications

This is a Canada Summer Jobs position, candidates must be between 15 –
30 years of age, be registered as a full time student in the previous
academic year and intend to return to school on a full time basis in
the next academic year. In addition, candidates must have/be:
• Experience in program or curriculum development
• Experience working with adolescent youth
• Physically fit to work outdoors in all conditions
• Willing to learn and have a desire to gain hands-on experience
• Familiar with small-scale agricultural production
• Able to communicate with diplomacy and respect with people of all
cultures, ages, and backgrounds
• Familiarity with, and commitment to, the vision and mission of Fresh Roots
• First Aid Certification
• Food or Market Safe Certification
• Subject to a criminal record check
• Driver’s Licence

Position Details

This position is contingent upon funding through Canada Summer Jobs.
• Begins May 4th;
• Ends August 28th
• $16.10/hr – 40 hrs/week
