Organizational Background

Foxglove Farm is a 120-acre organic farm and education center located
on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada. The farm is located
on one of the oldest homesteads on the island, surrounded by hundreds
of acres of protected forest, pastures and fields, bordering the
pristine Maxwell Lake.


The farm produces berries, asparagus, melons, greens, roots, a wide
range of annual Mediterranean vegetables, as well as diverse orchard
fruits. We also produce grains and pulses and manage a small flock of
pastured laying hens and herd of pigs.

Foxglove Farm is home to the Centre for Arts, Ecology & Agriculture.
The Centre was established to demonstrate and interpret the vital
connections between farming, land stewardship, food, the arts, and
community well being. Public programs, classes, and events are offered
throughout the summer and fall.

Foxglove Farm also offers accommodations and retreats in beautifully
restored cottages and in the original log home on one of the island’s
finest heritage working farm properties.

Position Description

The Field Foreman will work under the direction of the Farm Manager
supervising the day-to day management of farm operations.

Specific responsibilities
• Day to day farm staff, intern, and volunteer management
• Directing all field operations; cultivation, irrigation,
planting/transplanting, harvests, etc.
• Maintaining daily journal entries
• Crop/input/harvest record keeping
• Basic tool and equipment maintenance
• Maintaining a clean and orderly environment
• Management of all post harvest operations
• Marketing through our CSA, farmers markets, and wholesale accounts
• Soil fertility and preparation
• Maintenance of a diverse selection and well-timed successions of row
crop production
• Seed selection and plant propagation
• Direct seeding and transplanting for scheduled harvests
• Irrigation system maintenance, and management of farm crew irrigator;
• Tree fruit production including pruning, thinning, pest control,
replanting, etc.
• Research and development of new perennial plantings
• Pest and disease management
• Harvest, post harvest, and storage of crops
• Maintenance of all farm equipment and facilities, supervision of
repair and maintenance work

Skills and Requirements
• Minimum 3 years full-time production market farming experience
• Good interpersonal and supervisory skills
• Knowledge of basic tools, machinery operation/ maintenance
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
• Sense of humor

Salary is dependent on experience, includes housing, internet, and
select farm products for personal use.

**While this position is for the 2015/2016 seasons, ideally we are
seeking an individual who could begin training this season under our
talented and wonderful current Field Foreman.
