Backgrounder
The Foundation for Rural Living (FRL) provides a full time placement for Rural Development Officers in a rural nonprofit or voluntary organization. The Rural Development Officers role is to assist rural nonprofit and voluntary organizations with projects that support their sustainability.

Job Purpose
Under the day-to-day supervision of Alyson Nyiri, Green Workforce Analyst, the Rural Development Officer will fulfill the following objectives:

The selected candidate will work from the office of the Green Jobs Strategy project in Brussels, Ontario on community projects intended to support other rural not-for-profit and volunteer agencies/organizations in implementing green job strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities
* RDOs represent FRL and as such are responsible for fully participating in the activities outlined below

Responsibility/Duty: As outlined in FRL Participant’s Agreement
% of time: 10

Activities:
• Participate in FRL’s Learning Centre Programming
• Complete and submit Monthly reporting components
• Participate in FRL’s Evaluation Program
• Take part in monthly ½ hour human resources Coaching & Mentoring Sessions
• Conduct job searches and related activities (resume writing, upgrades, etc.)
• Attend FRL’s in-person Orientation and Conference events

Responsibility/Duty:
Participate in collaboration with Sustainable Huron (partnership of not for profit, municipal and community groups) to develop a best practices manual for greening businesses and other nonprofits to green their service delivery sites.

Activities:
• Assist with the planning and implementing not for profit and volunteer organizations and municipal meetings
• Participate in research on best practices relating to sustainability in the not for profit sector and community
• Attend meetings with project staff
• Assist project staff with information sharing with local community agencies

Participate in outreach activities

Activities:
• Assist with organization of information sessions with not for profits, volunteer organizations and stakeholders on career paths in the green sector

Responsibility/Duty:
Participate in updating Community information

% of time: 10
Activities:
• Assist Communications Outreach Coordinator with web site content updates for community projects

Responsibility/Duty:
Participate in developing resources for not for profit, volunteer and community organizations

% of time: 10
Activities:
• Assist with research for green job directories for various community agencies and volunteer organizations

Qualifications

Qualifications include:
• Ability to establish working relationships with multidisciplinary team and with local community stakeholders in nonprofit sector
• Demonstrated research and writing skills through previous project work through work projects or academic training.
• Experience with or knowledge of community development principles
• Strong skills with Microsoft Word, Excel

Skill Enhancement Opportunities
Participation in coaching and mentoring activities and opportunities for skill enhancement are an important component of this position.

Opportunities for skill enhancement are provided through participation in professional development and mentorship and guidance from FRL’s Staff and Partners.

Skill enhancement will include activities such as:
• Current experience in the not for profit and voluntary sector
• Project management planning
• Writing and communications in the not for profit sector
• Principles and practices of philanthropy, fund development and fundraising and social enterprise
• Proposal development and writing

Working conditions
Hours of Work – Work duties will be completed in an office setting during business hours, typically between 9am and 5pm with a one hour unpaid lunch break. Total working hours per week is 35. Some flexibility for working hours may be required with occasional evening hours and the possibility of overnight travel. Must have access to a vehicle.

All pre-approved travel expenses are covered by the employer.

Physical Environment — The RDO will work primarily in the office environment (in upper suite of building at 437 Turnberry St., Brussels) but may be required to work in a variety of environments including commuting to meetings with other staff members. Non-smoking environment, including vehicles used for employer-related activities.

Health & Safety — The employer will make every reasonable effort to minimize risks and ensure that there is adequate training, procedures and resources for staff to perform their jobs safety.

Compensation
Participants in the Rural Development Officer Program will:

Meet the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) requirements for eligibility in the Job Creation Partnership Program:
• Have established a claim for Employment Insurance benefits or their Employment Insurance benefit period ended within the past three years or
• Have established a claim for Employment Insurance maternity or parental benefits and were paid benefits within the past five years, and are re-entering the labour force after having left to care for newborn or newly adopted children

Receive remuneration from MTCU of $423 (before deductions) per week for the time they are in their placement
