of related records is known as a data file. Thus a patient file would contain
the record of points in a hospital. Files are frequently classified by the
application for which they are primarily use such as student course file or pt
registration file. Files are also classified by their permanents. In that case
there are 3 types of file. The master file, the transaction file and reference
file.

The Master File: This is file that contains fairly permanent data about something that
exist. It is permanent because it is kept for a long period of time. A master
file could remain for several years before changes are made to them. This type
of file is periodically updated with current transaction data.

The Transaction File: This file can also be referred to as changes file.
It is a collected of data relating to current business transaction. Transaction
data may be collected for period of time and processed in batches or may be
processed as it arises i.e. on an interactive transaction processing basis
(this is use to update the master file).

The Reference File: This is a file that contains reference information
i.e. information that can be referred to during data processing operation, such
files contain details pertaining to product prices to be used for invoice
computations, names and addresses of customers.
