Trophic Cascades in Aspen Parkland: Effects of ungulate density on the abundance of focal shrub, bird and butterfly species

Job Description
We are looking for a self motivated individual to help in data collection across multiple taxa including ungulate (moose, deer, elk, bison), vegetation, butterfly and bird species.

Responsibilities
• Bird Point Counts
• Vegetation Surveys
• Pollard walk surveys (butterflies)
• Ungulate pellet counts
• VHF moose telemetry
• Data entry

Location
Elk Island National Park, Cooking Lake, Miquelon Lake and Edgar T. Jones Provincial Recreational Areas, all approximately 45 minutes east of Edmonton, Alberta.

Duration
May 15 — Sept 15 (1 month minimum)

Wage
Accommodation in Elk Island National Park and a $200 food stipend is provided

Qualifications
1. Recent graduate or senior undergraduate of a BSc program in ecology, animal biology, conservation biology, environmental sciences, or natural resource science
2. Strong hiker in dense shrub understory

Preferred skills
• Knowledge in butterfly and bird (Aspen Parkland) identification
• Familiarity with trees and shrubs of the western boreal forest and aspen parkland
• Orienteering with handheld GPS unit and compass
• VHF telemetry
