Plowshare Farm is offering an apprentice position with stipend to those who are excited about learning to grow food sustainably. For the 2011 season we are seeking one apprentice to round out our current crew of 2 managers and 3 apprentices.
Plowshare Farm is a horse-powered community supported agriculture farm, growing more than 50 kinds of vegetables, herbs and cut-flowers. Located at Mapletons Organic Dairy, 40 minutes north of Kitchener and Guelph, we will be growing 4 acres of certified organic vegetables for the 2011 season. Field work and cultivation are done with our two Suffolk horses, Sam and Sally, and our Belgian mare Milly. Produce is sold through our 75 member CSA, a weekly farmers market, as well as at the Mapletons farmstore.
Plowshare Farm is striving to offer apprenticeships as a hands on and practical, individualized introduction to sustainable agriculture. Apprentices will take part in all aspects of starting, planting cultivating, harvesting and marketing of the crops, as well as weekly farm planning sessions, farm budgets and finances, and basic work with the horses. On-the-job learning is accompanied by two days each month set aside for farm visits and tours, workshops etc. The topics of these learning days will partly be determined by peoples different interests. Apprentices will also have access to our library of books as well as a recommended reading lists.
Housing, food, a small stipend and transportation to and from the farm are provided. Successful applicants should be eager to learn and hard working, with good communication skills.
