Project Description
The USAID funded Advancing Youth Project is a five year project to provide basic education,
social and leadership development, and improved livelihoods to out of school youth, ages 13 – 35 in five counties of Liberia. AYP will help Liberian young people develop the basic literacy,
numeracy, workforce readiness and life skills necessary to progress academically, obtain skills
training, find jobs, or create their own employment, as well maintain healthy lifestyles and
participate in their communities.
Position Title: Resource Room Intern
The Resource Room Intern will provide support to the effective functioning of the Learning
Resource Center resource rooms.
This position is an internship position which aims to provide a supportive learning environment to the successful applicant. Applicants will gain experience working with an international
organization that collaborates closely with the Liberian Government and partner NGOs. The
intern will receive a monthly stipend.
The position is for a three month term, with the possibility of renewing for an additional three
months. Internships are for a maximum of six months; you may not re-apply for the same
position again.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Log in all visitors to the resource room and report on user numbers to the LRC M&E
Officer
• Provide new users with an orientation to guidelines of the resource room; monitor proper
usage of the computers and books and ensure guidelines are followed.
• Assist students in reading, including reading aloud to children and students when
appropriate
• Provide tutoring support to learners in the resource room
• Ensure the appropriate usage of books within the LRC, including both effective usage
and security
• Catalog all new books received at the LRC system
• Assist in the development and operation of the Mobile Library system to provide books
to schools on a regular basis
• Assist the Training Officer and other LRC staff with arrangements for teacher trainings
or other meetings.
• In coordination with the IT Field Intern, provide on-site support or assistance to users
wanting help in using the computers.
• Ensure that all users follow proper internet protocol (as defined in project policy on
internet use)
• Help maintain equipment and be sure all equipment and resources are properly cleaned,
stored and secured at the end of each day.
• Identify and implement ways in which usage of Learning Resource Center facilities could
be improved
• Compile a monthly report of activities of the resource room.
• Attend training sessions as deemed relevant by the LRC team leader
• Other duties as required
Qualifications and Requirements:
• High School graduate with appropriate experience.
• Good reading skills; enthusiasm for reading and learning
• Ability to interact politely, respectfully and firmly with users of the Resource Room
• Meticulous organizational skills; ability to work independently with self-initiative
• Willingness to learn new skills on the job
• Ability to plan and organize
• Ability to work well with a team
• Good writing, communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and love of children
• Basic computer skills, including proper turning on and turning off, accessing Word
documents, familiarity with some Windows applications
• Basic use of internet services, including at least one search engine.
• Experience in teaching others basic computer skills is a plus
Reporting and Organizational Relationships:
This position is located in the Learning Resource Center and reports to the Team Leader. This
position will work in close collaboration with the IT Administrator, and maintain close working
relationships with other technical and operational team members as relevant.
