Job Description:
Job Title: Alternative Basic Education Coordinator
The Alternative Basic Education Coordinator will provide support to the effective functioning of the Alternative Basic Education (ABE) courses in all sites in the county, collaborating with relevant Ministry of Education (MOE) officials and communities, as well as learners and facilitators.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Assist in the selection process of ABE sites in the county
• In collaboration with the Team Leader, MOE officials and County School Boards, conduct recruitment for ABE facilitators and learners
• Help to coordinate, plan and implement trainings for ABE facilitators
• In collaboration with the MOE, provide regular supervision of and mentoring to ABE facilitators
• Provide specific support to incorporate best practices in literacy and numeracy to facilitators
• Provide monitoring and support to facilitators to improve teaching practices, with particular regard to time on task, attendance and punctuality, student-centered teaching, and other pedagogical methods as prioritized by the project
• Provide support to facilitators to develop local teaching aids
• In collaboration with the M&E Officer and the MOE, collect data on learners and facilitators
• In collaboration with the M&E Officer and the MOE, conduct assessments of learners and facilitators. This may include administering tests, observing classrooms and/or conducting surveys.
• Identify problem areas for ABE facilitators and learners, and collaborate with the Teaching and Learning Team and other project staff as relevant to find strategies to address these areas
• Write field reports, as required and contribute to weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports • Conduct these and other tasks as required in support of project goals
Qualifications and Requirements:
• A minimum of 5 years experience in education, preferably including classroom teaching experience in the formal or non formal sector
• Bachelor’s degree in education or any of the social sciences preferred
• Demonstrated teaching skills, particularly in basic literacy and numeracy, is essential
• Experience in teacher training, supervision and/or mentoring
• Knowledge of/experience with USAID-funded projects preferred
• Ability to plan and organize work
• Must be able to work within a cross cultural setting
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Good communication skills in spoken and written English required
• Proactive problem solver
• Culturally astute, respectful and tolerant
• Ability to work both independently and in a team
• Willingness to reside in one of the counties covered by the project and to travel extensively with the county
• Ability to write reports and enter data using MS Word and MS Excel
Reporting and Organizational Relationships:
This position is located in Montserrado County and reports to the Team Leader/County Alliance Coordinator. This position will maintain close communication relationships with the project participants; facilitators, learners, etc and other technical teams as well as operational and financial staff as relevant
