Volunteer
Opportunity description
EMORG is looking for volunteers
to help us expand the capacity and quality of education in the Kisongo area
(about 14 km outside of Arusha).
Start and
End Dates:
Flexible, seeking minimum one month commitment
About Us: Located in Kisongo Village,
EMORG is a registered non-profit organization that aims to improve education in
the area through its community library, on-site programs and classes, and
outreach to local schools. We are looking to extend our reach to more students
in the area, and looking for qualified volunteers that can help us.
Job
Description:
Volunteers will be given the option to work at a local school, our library, or
both. Our volunteer program is flexible and we are willing to work with you to
design your ideal volunteer experience. Our only stipulation is that those who
decide to work with local schools MUST dedicate at least one month to
volunteering.
Local School: Based
on your skills and desires, we will pair you with a teacher from one of the
participating local schools in and around the Kisongo area. Together you and
the teacher will design lesson plans that you both will co-teach.
Library: We also
currently have a community library, and are hoping to expand its role in
servicing students in the area. We are hoping to make the library a fun and
interactive place for students to come after-school to seek academic assistance
or just enjoy the afternoon. Volunteers will have the option to host ‘homework
classes’ (local school children will come and do their homework, and ask for
assistance from you when needed), offer specialized classes chosen by the
volunteer (ex: writing properly structured essays, water conservation,
painting, etc), or just host a story-time reading with the children.
Fund-raising:
We ask each
volunteer to conduct at least one fund-raising activity in their community, and
to raise a minimum of $200. The $200 will be used to buy school supplies for
the class that the volunteer teaches. For any amount raised over $200,
volunteers can choose which project to direct the money to, or if he or she
wishes, could use the money for a project of their own (with the approval of
EMORG). We are happy to assist you in preparing and designing your fund-raising
event.
