PhD Funding Opportunities 2012 Entry
3 Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Studentships
The Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University is pleased to announce that, through its involvement in the Wales Doctoral Training Centre, it will be awarding the following three ESRC Postgraduate Studentships for 2012 entry:
i) One +3 studentship (for 3 years of PhD study) open to applicants who wish to examine democratisation and democracy promotion in any of the regions of the world that fall within staff research expertise (Middle East, East-Central Europe, former USSR, Latin America,
Africa).
ii) One +3 studentship (for 3 years of PhD study) open to applicants in any area of politics and international relations.
iii) One 1+3 studentship (1 year Research Training Masters programme followed by 3 years of PhD study) open to applicants in any area of politics and international relations.
ESRC studentships are available to UK and other EU applicants. +3 awards are available to those who have completed a Research Training (RT) Masters degree in a pathway recognised by the ESRC. UK award holders will receive tuition fees, a subsistence allowance of
approximately £13,590 per year (2011-12 rate) and, during the PhD registration period, will have access to a research/travel fund.
EU award holders from outside the UK will receive tuition fees and access to a research/travel fund, unless they have spent at least three consecutive years in the UK prior to commencing their award, in which case the full studentship will apply.

EH Carr Studentships
The Department of International Politics wishes to invite applications for the prestigious EH Carr PhD studentships for 2012 entry which are for research in any area of politics and international relations.
EH Carr studentships cover UK/EU tuition fees for up to three years and include a maintenance grant of approximately £13,590 per year (2011-12 rates) and access to a travel/research fund. Award holders from outside the EU would be required to cover the difference between
the UK/EU and International student tuition fees.
In addition to undertaking their PhD research, successful candidates will engage in a tailor-made career development programme, to include, for example, undergraduate seminar teaching.

Doctoral Career Development Scholarships (DCDS)
Aberystwyth University is pleased to invite applications for Doctoral Career Development Scholarships (DCDS) for PhD students for 2012 entry. These scholarships will cover UK/EU PhD tuition fees for up to three years and provide a subsistence allowance of approximately £13,590 per year (2011-12 rates) along with access to a travel/research fund of £500 per year. In addition to undertaking their PhD research, successful candidates will engage in a tailor-made career development programme, to include, for example, undergraduate seminar teaching.
Up to three DCDS scholarships will be available for international students, and in addition to the above, these will include a fee waiver for the difference between UK/EU and International tuition fees.

How to Apply
Applications for PhD study can be made on-line using
UKPASS or alternatively, forms can be downloaded and printed from the Postgraduate Admissions Office website and submitted by email or by hardcopy. A research proposal of no more than 1,500 words, two letters of reference and academic transcripts and are also required. There are no separate application forms for funding.
The application process is two-stage. Candidates shortlisted for a place on the PhD programme will be invited to interview in person or by phone/Skype. Most interviews are conducted as part of the Department’s PhD Visiting Days, which will be held on 7-8 March 2012.
The interview is also a part of the process of determining the allocation of funding.
