Design for Manufacturing in Baby Products: Small Decisions With Large Consequences

Product design is often judged by appearance, originality, and user appeal. Manufacturers must also ask a different question:

Can the design be produced repeatedly, assembled correctly, inspected efficiently, and used safely?

Design for manufacturing, commonly shortened to DFM, connects a concept with the realities of production.

Wall Thickness Affects More Than Material Use

Molded parts need suitable wall thickness.

Areas that are too thin may not fill correctly during molding. Areas that are unnecessarily thick may cool unevenly, distort, or increase production time.

Sudden changes in thickness can also create visible or structural problems.

A DFM review may recommend gradual transitions, reinforcing ribs, or changes to internal geometry. These adjustments are often invisible to the customer but important to production consistency.

Undercuts Increase Tooling Complexity

An undercut is a feature that prevents a molded part from being removed directly from a simple mold.

Some undercuts are necessary for product function. Others are created unintentionally by decorative shapes or complex geometry.

They may require sliders, lifters, collapsible components, or a redesigned structure. This increases mold cost, maintenance requirements, and production complexity.

Reviewing these features before tooling allows the brand to decide whether the benefit justifies the cost.

Parting Lines and Gate Marks Must Be Planned

Every molded product carries evidence of how it was produced.

Parting lines occur where mold sections meet. Gate marks appear where material enters the mold cavity. Ejector marks can result from removing the part.

The design team should decide where these marks are acceptable. Placing them on a visible front surface or a sensitive contact area may reduce the perceived quality of the product.

A good DFM discussion includes appearance as well as production.

Products Must Be Designed for Cleaning

Baby feeding products are repeatedly disassembled and washed. Complex internal channels, narrow gaps, deep corners, and hidden joints can make cleaning difficult.

A design may be technically manufacturable but still inconvenient for parents.

Design review should therefore consider:

  • Whether parts can be separated
  • Whether cleaning tools can reach internal areas
  • Whether water can drain
  • Whether components can be reassembled correctly
  • Whether small parts are necessary
  • Whether instructions will be clear

Ease of cleaning is both a design and user-experience issue.

Sealing Depends on Tolerances

Bottles, cups, lids, valves, and containers often rely on several parts fitting within a controlled dimensional range.

Every manufactured dimension varies slightly. The designer must specify acceptable tolerances and consider how variation across several components affects the assembled product.

A seal that works in a single prototype may fail when normal production variation is introduced.

Manufacturers should test representative component combinations rather than only one carefully selected sample.

Assembly Should Be Difficult to Get Wrong

Products should be designed so that components have a clear orientation and assembly sequence.

When parts can be installed incorrectly, the product may leak or perform poorly even though none of the components is defective.

Simple alignment features, visual indicators, and fewer unnecessary parts can improve both factory assembly and consumer use.

DFM Is Most Valuable Before Tooling

Once a production mold has been built, structural changes become slower and more expensive.

Better Manufacturing Can Improve the Product

DFM is sometimes interpreted as reducing a design to make it cheaper. That is an incomplete view.

A thoughtful manufacturing review can produce:

  • More consistent dimensions
  • Easier cleaning
  • Better sealing
  • Simpler assembly
  • Lower defect rates
  • More efficient packaging
  • Longer tooling life

The purpose is not to weaken the original concept. It is to make the concept work reliably outside a rendering or prototype.
