Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship for International Journalists

Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship is available for senior and mid-career journalists
(with at least five years experience) from North America, Central and South
America, Europe, the Asia Pacific region, Africa and the Mideast. Fellows
attend an intensive weeklong program of seminars and discussions held at
Columbia University in New York City.

The Dart Center’s
mission is to improve the quality of journalism on traumatic events, while also
raising awareness in newsrooms of the impact such coverage has on the
journalists telling the stories.

The Dart Center for
Journalism and Trauma is a resource center and think tank for journalists who
cover violence, conflict, and tragedy around the world. A project of the
Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City, the Dart
Center also operates Dart Centre in Europe, based in London; Dart Centre
Australasia, based in Melbourne; Dart Center West based at the University of
Washington in Seattle; and a research node at the University of Tulsa.

All fellowship
seminars are conducted in English. Fellows must be fluent in spoken English to
participate in the program.

This fellowship is available to senior and mid-career journalists to attend a
week long seminar at Columbia University in New York City.

Scholarship
Award:

The Ochberg Fellowship covers roundtrip travel to and accommodations in New
York City, meals and other expenses directly related to participation. The
program does not cover costs related to travel visas, health insurance or
ground transportation in fellows’ home cities.

Eligibility:

  • The Ochberg
    Fellowships are open to outstanding senior and mid-career journalists
    (with at least five years experience) working across all media.
  • Past
    Fellows have ranged from small-town and regional general-assignment and
    crime reporters to war photographers and foreign correspondents for
    international news organizations. Applicants’ work must demonstrate
    journalistic excellence and a strong track record of covering violence and
    its impact on individuals, families or communities.
  • Fellowships
    are open to print, broadcast and online reporters, photographers, editors
    and producers with no fewer than five years’ full-time journalism
    experience. Approximately half of the Fellows will be based in North America,
    with the balance drawn from Central and South America, Europe, the Asia
    Pacific region, Africa and the Middle East.
  • All
    fellowship seminars are conducted in English. Fellows must be fluent in
    spoken English to participate in the program.
