Conservation and Scientific Research Fellowships for International Applicants

The
Metropolitan Museum of Art is pleased to offer Conservation and Scientific
Research Fellowships to study in USA. Fellows from all around the world are
eligible to apply for this program.
The
Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded on April 13, 1870, “to be located in the
City of New York, for the purpose of establishing and maintaining in said city a
Museum and library of art, of encouraging and developing the study of the fine
arts, and the application of arts to manufacture and practical life, of
advancing the general knowledge of kindred subjects, and, to that end, of
furnishing popular instruction.”

Course
Level:
Fellowships
are available for pursuing research.
Study
Subject:

Junior fellows work closely with Met staff to receive training on scientific
research and conservation practices. Senior fellows work on a specific research
project that makes use of the Museum’s collection and/or resources.
Number
of Scholarships:
 The
number of fellowships awarded depends on funds and resources available.
Scholarship
Award: 
The
stipend amount for one year is $42,000 for junior fellows and $52,000 for
senior fellows, with up to an additional $6,000 for travel (maximum of six
weeks).

Eligibility: The following
criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for these
fellowships:
  • PhD
    candidates, postdoctoral scholars, and senior scientists and researchers
    are eligible to apply.
  • Junior
    fellows are those applicants who have recently completed graduate-level
    training; senior fellows are well-established professionals with at least
    eight years of experience in the field and a proven publication record, or
    those who have their PhD in hand by the deadline date.
Nationality:
Fellows
from all around the world are eligible to apply for this programme.
How
to Apply:

All applications must be submitted online and in English. We will not accept
applications or related materials via email, postal mail, or in person.
Junior
Fellowship Application Procedures
The
online application will require you to provide the following:
Documents
as Microsoft Word or PDF files:
  • Full
    curriculum vitae of education, professional experience, honors, awards,
    and publications
  • Proposal,
    not to exceed one thousand words, including:
    • A
      statement of interest and intent
    • Project
      proposal describing why The Metropolitan Museum of Art is uniquely suited
      to your fellowship objectives, what you expect to accomplish during the
      fellowship period, and how you will utilize the Museum’s resources and
      collections to achieve your goals
  • Official
    undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  • For
    Paper Conservation applicants only:
  • Two
    treatment reports and associated documentation with explanations
    justifying the reason for treatment and decisions entering each stage of
    treatment (not to exceed 750 words per object)
Contact
information for three recommenders (at least one academic and one
professional), none of whom may be current Metropolitan Museum of Art staff.
Once you have submitted your recommenders’ names, titles, and email
addresses, they will automatically be emailed instructions for
uploading their letters online. Please note that each letter must include the
recommender’s complete title and contact information. We encourage recommenders
to submit letters in English.
Senior
Fellowship Application Procedures
Senior
fellowships are intended for well-established professionals with at least eight
years of experience in the field and a proven publication record, or those who
have their PhD in hand by the deadline date.
Metropolitan
Museum of Art welcomes preliminary inquiries from senior applicants regarding
the suitability of the project proposal to the departmental areas of research.
The
online application will require you to provide the following:

  • Full

  • Project
    proposal including:
  • A
    statement, not to exceed one thousand words, describing what you expect to
    accomplish during the fellowship period and how you will utilize the

  • Tentative
    schedule of work to be accomplished during the fellowship period and
    proposed starting and ending dates
  • Contact
    information for three recommenders (at least one academic and one
    professional), none of whom may be current Metropolitan Museum of Art
    staff. Once you have submitted your recommenders’ names, titles, and email
    addresses, they will automatically be emailed instructions for uploading
    their letters online. Please note that each letter must include the

Application
Deadline:

The deadline for all application materials, including transcripts and letters
of recommendation, is December 5, 2017.
