Conclusion

There is no
doubt that the oil activities carried out by man has greatly impacted the
environment the quality of our environment has been on decline over the years.
In November
2008 a judgment by the Federal High Court of Nigeria ordered  that gas flaring must be stop in Niger Delta communities
as it violates guaranteed constitutional right to life and dignity in case
brought against the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigerian (Shell) Justice
C. V. Nwokorie ruled in Benin City that the “damaging and wasteful” practice of
flaring cannot lawfully continue. As of May 2011, shell has not ceased gas flaring
in Nigeria.

Plastic is
killing our oceans, oil spill has polluted farm land, water aquatic life, over
population and poverty is greatly seen in the state.  The ecosystem services are limited but also
threatened by activities of man, the need to better consider long term
ecosystem health and it role in enabling human inhabitation and economic
activities is urgent.  For the already degraded
environment, it will be helpful if strict adherence to the promotion of environmental
risk assessment prior to the project initiation is adopted, newer and tighter
regulations and enforcement of existing environmental population laws will help
stem the degradation of the environment and excessive population growth.
Strict
enforcement of environmental laws regardless of whose ox is gored is both
necessary and mandatory in engendering a new regime of environmental management
and sustainable development in Nigeria’s
Niger Delta region
Finally education of the populace is very
important to create awareness which will enable a behavioural change can how we
treat the ecosystem which is the life support given by the creator to mankind
