Renfrew Collingwood Food Security I
nstitute is based out of Collingwood
Neighbourhood House. With our many partner organizations and volunteers, we
strive to promote intercultural learning and leadership around sustainable
growing, local food, diverse food traditions, and healthy eating in the
Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood. We believe that food is a human right, and
that the “right to food” means much more than meeting basic nutritional
requirements. We help bring neighbours together to find solutions to issues
like hunger and isolation in our community.
OVERVIEW
Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute (RCFSI) is seeking an energized and
dedicated individual to join the Food Security team this summer. This person
will be responsible for supporting the organization, facilitation and promotion
of community food & garden activities and celebratory events with the RCFSI.
Existing projects include our Rooftop Garden, Community Orchard and Food Skills
workshops, along with animating the newly established Norquay Neighbourhood
Food Hub at Norquay Park. This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs
program and applicants must be registered full-time students during the
preceding academic year and have intentions to return to school on a full-time
basis in the next academic year. Applicants must also be between the ages of 15
and 30, legally able to work in Canada and must complete a criminal record
check prior to contract start date.
- Recruit
and engage a diverse volunteer team including youth-at-risk, seniors,
newcomers (immigrants and refugees) and low-income residents in urban
agriculture activities and community food programs - Help
design and host community events, workshops and celebrations to create
intergenerational and intercultural connections - Support
initiatives such as community food sharing programs, community gardening,
and food skills workshops - Mentor
volunteers - Assist
with outreach and communications (such as emails and website) to promote
food and food growing programs and resources, including rooftop gardening,
community kitchens, and mason bee monitoring - Assist
or co-facilitate cooking and food preservation workshops - Develop
and facilitate weekly gardening activities with the intergenerational
rooftop garden team - Work
with volunteers and leadership teams to harvest and/or collect locally
produced fruits and vegetables for distribution to lower-income
residents - Manage
data entry as required by project funders - Help
to organize regular drop-in activities at the Norquay Community Learning
Orchard - Assist
in organizing and hosting community celebrations and educational events
around organic food growing and sustainable food systems, including
animating new Norquay Neighbourhood Food Hub - Assist
in website/blog content development and maintenance - Document
and evaluate progress of work through weekly reports to supervisor
- Knowledge
and passion for food issues, social justice and urban agriculture - Familiarity
with “food security” and “food justice” issues - Experience
working with vulnerable populations (including seniors and
newcomers) - Experience
leading intergenerational, intercultural volunteer teams - Organizational
and time management skills - Strong
